Excellent Quality
Great quality, sturdy, and easily-to-see components. This unit will make substantial sparks. Very impressive to the grandkids. Be ready for a painful bite if you are not careful...I wasn't sure if it was a mistake getting a hand-cranked model (versus motor-operated). But it is very simple to operate and does not require a cord. In some ways, it's better. Just a few turns produce a significant charge. It has already seen a lot of service with no signs of wear and tear.Highly recommendPSThe "Electrostatics Kit, 7 Pieces - Designed to be Used with Eisco Labs Van De Graaff and Wimshurst Machines" is a great addition.

Worked great right out of the box
I'm impressed with the quality of the generator. It seems quite sturdy and worked well right out of the box. The pulleys are well aligned and handle turns the belt well. I was easily able to charge up the top sphere with about 10 turns of the handle to where it was discharging into the air. I could pull about an 1 1/2 -3 inch spark from top sphere to the sphere on the wand . It came well packed so there was no shipping damage.

Happy with quality
I was concerned that there wouldn't be a spark, due to air quality/weather in this area, but there is a spark, and there are enough different fun experiment materials included, that students will be able to see electricity at work even if the air turns too humid to show a spark. Also, seems pretty sturdy.

Hand-cranked definitely the way to go with these
What a remarkable thing to have in your home! In its own way, it has become the centerpiece of my studio apartment, perched atop my wizarding shelf, ready to demonstrate the wisdom of why High Voltage / Low Current demonstrations are best achieved with hand-cranked devices. See? It's all about building-up a charge, and using a powered Van De Graaf Generator always felt a little hokey to me for educational purposes. Just about their only purpose is to make your hair stand on end. But a hand-cranked one... oh, that shows you exactly how you can build up a charge. Next to a plasma ball, it makes a pretty spectacular double-lightning bolt light-show effect, but it will blow out the plasma ball's electronics :-)

It is well constructed and works fine, just wasn't as powerful as I'd hoped
A little wimpy on power. It is well constructed and works fine, just wasn't as powerful as I'd hoped.
