Can this take 20vdc 5amp to output 120vac 0.5amp? The output needed is 40w continuously. Would that work?

Based only on the specs yes this board should be capable of this, I have never drawn continuously that much power from it. But keep in mind too that this is not a 60 hz sine output either. This is a noisey approx. 20 khz square wave that many circuits do not work well with.

Is the output electrically isolated from the input?

The input voltage terminals are insulated from surrounding environments on the board. If not, it would short out. I own one of these boards and I use it to power a 20 watt 110volt ac led bulb. Your not going to operate much with these units, but they work as described.

How do i get power on the a/c side. i have 12vdc going in, but when i touch my multi-meter leads to the contacts(v0-v2) i get no a/c power.

You will get AC voltage once you apply a load to the output. Just not in the traditional sense. Inverters are a little weird when it comes to that....One of the reasons, as previously stated in another users comment, is that the frequency is much higher....which is technically true but not in the sense that compares to the 60hz you get from a wall outlet in your house. These inverters (all inverters do this) create an artificial sine wave using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). What they are really doing to turning the transistors on and off incredible fast (~10-20 kHz), and are chopping the DC voltage up into smaller chunks. Think of this like a Riemann Sum for my math nerds out there. So the transistor is switching at a rate of 10-20kHz but thats because is creating an artificial sine wave that is oscillating at 60Hz just like your wall outlet. Because of this, it can screw up your multimeter readings because the multimeter gets confused by the high frequency switching if it's a lower quality inverter. Nevertheless, this will power your 120VAC components because the carrier frequency of the transistor is so high (10-20kHz) that the load doesn't even see it....depending on what your load is....All it sees is the artificial 120V AC sine wave oscillating at 60Hz. If you want to get a better understanding, hook up an oscilloscope to the output and you'll see the PWM in action

Works as expected

I hooked it up to a 50 Watt solar panel that was producing 20 volts. I had difficulty with other converters because they would sound an alarm when the voltage went over 15 volts. This device worked. I tested the output with a volt meter and it read 117 volts ac, 168 volts and 210 volts depending in where I hooked up the meter. I haven't hooked it up to any devices yet.

No output terminals as shown in the picture

Unless you are willing to modify the module, this is essentially unusable as a "drop in" for a project that requires terminal post connections. I did not test to see if it even meets the specifications they claim as I am already skeptical of anything from this company

Might cook your gadgets

I really wanted this item to work, I was planning on making a portable 120v battery pack of sorts. However, when testing the voltage it was sporadic. Bouncing between 25 and 450 volts. I wasn't sure if this was due to my multimeter not being able to read this sort of boosted voltage (I believe its something to do with the frequency or waveform or something like that). Thinking it may just be my meter I plugged it into my lipo battery charger and it worked for about 3 seconds then fried my charger. Luckily it wasn't too expensive but long story short I would not recommend this product.

Product works. But not perfectly... It needs to be used correctly. First off, it does not put out 50/60hz frequency. The output could not be read by standard multimeter as the frequency is much higher than the typical 50/60hz (I dont know what it is, but some other reviews said 20k hz)... That was okay for my application, but not likely okay for many others... It successfully increases the voltage. The description says it is rated to 24V in multiple places. It is not. The capacitor connected in parallel to the input is rated to 16V. I learned this only after the capacitor exploded... Be careful.

Works great

Load testing gave 170ma into 350v, perfect for my tube tester. Those who are reporting no VAC out probably have meters than wont read a 20khz ac signal. The output is 20khz not 60hz. Cheap dvms will not read above 1khz usually.
