Good substitute for official charger
Our standard office laptop is the Microsft Surface Book 2 with its proprietary charger end. Official chargers are very, very expensive. So I was pleased to try this alternative. It so nearly got one start due to my error. It comes with the Ac brick and a small kettle-type lead with a UK 3 pin plug. It arrives with them seperate so the simple job is to connect them together and you're good to go. At first plug in I saw no charge - then worryingly, it started making a pop noise. I was about to disconnect and bin it, when I realised that the kettle lead end wasn't fully pushed into the AC brick. With a proper shove the connection went in another half inch and you could feel it was solidly in place. Once I'd sorted this, no issues whatever. It provides good charge to the surface book (and other surface devices we have at work with the same connector) and there are no more worrying noises! So this is recommended - just remember to push in the kettle lead first time it is used until you're certain it is in all the way!

Apparently fully compatible and functional
Far more affordable than is an OEM replacement for the original which is fortunately still fully functional, and all but physically identical, this "Surface Book Charger Surface Pro Charger, CIVIE 44W 15V 2.58A Power Supply for Microsoft Surface Book Surface Pro 3 Pro 4 Pro 5 Pro 6 Surface Go Surface Laptop Charger Adapter" is claimed to be fully compatible with most Surface models from version 3 upwards and was acquired as a spare in the event of future issues. It offers the same white LED power indicator while powering the Surface. As is immediately apparent, the Surface series of convertible notebooks use a power connector quite unlike any other as it has a long, flat section similar to a key rather than one of the more usual cylindrical types. It also uses a magnetic attachment similar in principle to that of recent MacBooks & MB Pros although in a very different format. It is therefore unique amongst the generality of PSUs. Screen and keyboard modules, where applicable, each have their own internal battery where that in the keyboard extends the power life of the screen unit/tablet when connected together. Although the screen module can be recharged alone, the keyboard's battery can only be recharged when both are latched together. The connector therefore has several contacts beyond the two or three that most PSUs typically possess. There are also a few Surface accessories, e.g. some dedicated Microsoft expansion docks, that use the standard PSU for their own power but then provides a power and data pass-through to the notebook. They, too, could use this in the event that the original had failed. As it successfully powers and recharges my own Series 4 Surface Pro, it should therefore work equally well with the other Surface models mentioned, no more of which were immediately available for confirmation, and with the accessories that also use it.

A good value replacement or spare power supply for various Microsoft Surface computers
This replacement Power Supply for Microsoft Surface computers has the model number DHM1800 and is supplied by CIVIE – it carries all the safety logos you would hope to see. It performs OK with my Surface Book i5-6300U, and is considerably cheaper than a genuine Microsoft-branded replacement – it has the unique Microsoft Surface connector and the “brick” has the handy USB power-out port like my original unit. Whether you are looking for a replacement Surface power supply, or a spare to keep at a different location, this model from CIVIE is well worth considering at the price, and at about twenty pounds currently from Amazon it is one of the best value models now available. Five stars for value and performance – check for compatibility using this list under Product Description.

Not a perfect design
This is a perfectly good charger – it works as expected, there is an indicator light to show that the laptop is charging and the integrated usb port is useful for charging another device at the same time. The AC-DC converter is bigger and bulker than the original that was delivered with the Surface Pro, but then it is significantly cheaper to buy than a Microsoft branded replacement. My one criticism of it is that the lead that runs to the laptop is shorter than on the branded version; with the Surface Pro on a normal-height desk, the converter doesn’t quite reach the floor so, unless you are very near a power outlet and can have the converter sitting on the desk, the weight of the dangling converter pulls the magnetic cable out of the side of the Surface Pro. Depending on how you use the charger and where your nearest power point is, this may or may not be a significant issue. I also notice that the connection where the power cable plugs into the converter is rather loose-fitting.

Not as neat as the Microsoft one, but much cheaper.
I got this for my Surface Pro tablet as a back-up for my original charger. Unlike the Microsoft unit, which has the voltage transformer built into the mains plug, the design of this is more like that of a traditional laptop charger, with a 1 metre mains lead, with a standard 3-pin UK mains plug on one end and a figure-8 plug on the other. The figure-8 plug fits into the transformer box, which is approximately 105 x 55 x 30mm (LxWxH), from which the charging lead itself runs another metre and a bit.The magnetic connection is as strong as with the "proper" charger and the charging rate is good.Electrically, the rated maximum charging current is higher at 2.58A, compared to the Microsoft version's 1.6A at 15V.So, the main features are as good or better than the original, and it's much cheaper, but given the style-led design of the Surface products, the old-fashioned clunkiness of this charger's looks a little out of place.
