They are not intended to hold one's weight especially when pushing or pulling against the barre. The barre should not be used as a crutch. Downward weight is OK as that will not push the barre over. In ballet, learning to use a freestanding ballet barre without tipping it over is a benefit, as it helps to improve one's balance and strengthen one's core.

Disappointed! Looks professional and sturdy but arrived with defective and missing parts & scratch
I don't know if I was sent a return that wasn't inspected before it was shipped to me, but one of the clamps had a frozen screw in it, and three screws for the other clamps were missing, and there was a scratch two inches long on one of the horizontal bars. Because I don't want to return a heavy object while in lockdown and keep doing my at-home ballet class with a swivel office chair for another week, I've contacted the seller for replacement and additional parts. Otherwise I'd just send the thing back and try another brand. I'll see how the seller responds, and review how they handle the situation under seller feedback. I'll also add that halfway into the assembly process (of course, I couldn't go farther without the screws and with the frozen one that can't be backed out), that this is EXTREMELY difficult for one person to assemble, and the included tool fits the screws but is the wrong size, as you can't do a full rotation to set or release the screws because there's not enough clearance on ANY part. I bought this barre on the basis of the good reviews and that it is made in the USA, but the packaging and assembly process so far is not up to the quality of the price tag, though it looks very sturdy and is of the quality of a studio portable barre.

Solid ballet bar for serious dancers
Really sturdy. Not sure yet how "portable" it is--not too heavy, but you do need to align the poles and tighten so there is some set up/break down. We bought for our dancer daughter for Christmas. She loves it but it is super big. She thinks she could have gotten away with 6 ft, but I thought, and based on reviews, she would grow into it and appreciate the full size in time so what's the extra 2 feet?

Love this!
Love this!! Perfect stability for a barre class. It was a gift, and I wasn’t expecting the 6 foot, but I’m glad I got this instead of the 5 foot. If you have the space, it’s worth it. Easy to assemble.

Fantastic, but be careful in hot studios!
I love everything about this barre except the fact that when the studio I use it in is really warm, the poles do not stay in the braces very well. I can tighten the snot out of them, and they'll still slide right out after a few minutes sitting in the warmer temperature. Other than that hazard, I've found it to be great. Sturdy, long enough that I can extend my leg all directions, doesn't scuff the floor, easy to assemble/disassemble. But do be careful about the poles slipping out! Keep your studio below 65 degrees!

Good but WOBBLY
This barre works for our Studio, however, it is a bit wobbly and I have not figured out how to fix it.

Excellent
This one is pro version, while there is another from the same vendor which is not a pro. Pro version is heavier and costlier, but tubes bend much less under the pressure. For heavier, stronger ballet dancer and for frequent exercises - pro is better.
