Alfalfa Hay for Rabbits & Small Pets, 5 lbs

Even in my rural area the days are long gone when you could pick up a full square bale of alfalfa for a few bucks from a neighboring dairy farmer, alas. But this hay is that fresh and green and sweet-smelling, and the price for a 10-pound box is very reasonable compared to buying lower-quality product in small bags from major suppliers, usually grown in an unknown location under unknown conditions. I love that this hay is of verifiable provenance, and that it comes direct from the grower in a cardboard box with no plastic packaging.I'm on my third box (two 10-lb orders, plus a 5-lb when the larger size was out of stock) and the quality has been consistently superior to hay I've gotten from other sources. My 5.5-lb mini lop eagerly munches his way through 10 lbs in about 2-1/2 months. The 5-lb box may have had a slightly lower moisture content and thus a marginally higher percentage of broken leaves at the bottom of the box, but you're never going to completely eliminate stray leaves and dust; that's just an intrinsic characteristic of alfalfa. If you can't bear to waste the crumbs, try using them to make homemade treats (there are lots of recipes online for treats for a variety of small critters).My strongly opinionated bunny had only ever been given alfalfa hay when I adopted him as an adult, and he consequently refuses to eat the recommended timothy (or orchard grass, or oat hay, or botanical mix, or dandelion greens, or, or, or…). I'm looking forward to tempting him to make the switch to timothy when The Viking Farmer's first timothy harvest arrives.UPDATE: Viking Farmer's 2nd cut timothy hay is in and bun goes just as crazy for that, plus it's so much healthier for an adult rabbit's main meal. Yay! Alfalfa still delicious but now an occasional treat.

This VIKING HAY made ALL the difference in getting my rabbit to love hay! She turned her nose up at all the other ones people suggested on my bunny pages I am on. This stuff looks soo FRESH and SMELLS GREAT! I am so glad I can finally get my bunnies to eat something that is essential to their diet and health! My buns are super picky about their hay. They literaly dove into the box as soon as they realized it was here. I also got a surprise gift of a sample of their pellets. Both buns adored them! We are going to have to switch to their pellets now, I've never seen such great quality pellets. The hay is so nice and green and there was little to no dust. As someone who hardly ever posts reviews, I am beyond ellated with the quality of this hay! My only wish is that Amazon could do weekly deliveries instead of every two weeks, but that is it.

I purchased this alfalfa hay for my two 3-month-old guinea pigs. Our vet recommended to only give them alfalfa hay since their previous home had never given them fresh veggies, and I was having a hard time getting them to eat any. I was originally giving them Oxbow alfalfa, but it was too pricey for my liking, even though my piggies loved it. I saw the great reviews for this alfalfa hay that harped on its freshness and how green it was, so I decided to give it a try.When it arrived, the first thing I noticed when I opened the box was the smell (or lack thereof). It smelled like absolutely nothing. That was the first sign that this hay was not fresh. Usually, when you open up a fresh bag of hay, the smell comes wafting up at you. This “hay” did not smell like anything at all, which was concerning. The next thing I noticed was its appearance. The hay appeared wiry and thin, and it was not green at all. This hay did not look fresh or nutritious in any way. It also came in two very large blocks that required you to manually break the hay apart and/or cut it, which leads me to my next issue.When I picked the hay up to pull it apart, it was extremely dry, hard, and prickly. It literally hurt my fingers to pick up the hay from the box. All of the leafy material was just in dry, crunchy, brittle piles at the bottom of the box. Knowing that this wouldn’t go over well with my piggies, I still decided to let them try it for themselves. I have a hay box at the end of their cage where they love to frolic around in, sleep in, and eat the mounds of hay. When I put this hay into their box, they went in and sniffed around, tried to forage for some good hay, and ultimately left. They would not step foot back into the hay box while this hay was still in there as it was uncomfortable, and I’m sure it wasn’t appetizing.I live in a small town without many businesses nearby, which is why I ordered the hay online. I ended up having to drive 30 mins to a nearby town to find a farming supply store and purchased their brand of alfalfa hay. I had never bought their hay before, but noticed the difference immediately. I swapped out this hay with the hay that I bought from the farming supply store, and my piggies had a field day chomping down on and burrowing in hay that they could actually eat and that didn’t feel like barbed wire to their sensitive little feet.I really had high hopes for this hay, considering the good reviews, but it definitely did not meet my expectations. I took a picture of the Viking Farmer hay (bottom) and the hay I purchased from the farming supply store to document the difference. Maybe I just received a box of the bad batch of hay. I don’t know, but I’m not willing to take another chance on this hay, especially if I’m getting low because this was utterly disappointing, and my piggies always need their hay.

Freshest alfalfa hay I have ever found! My bunnies LOVE it!! Best value for the money.I have 12 bunnies and usually a few pregnant or nursing Does. This is rich alfalfa giving them the extra they need. The large box for $34 lasts quite awhile and is really packed I there unlike competitors I have tried that it is not packed in there and MUCH less hay as a result. They ship quickly and quality packaging. It is rich in green color and they go crazy over it!
