This is my go to screen after trying a number of different styles and thicknesses
As my title states this is my go to screen. I too fell onto the screen bandwagon and doing my own Coffee beans for many years roasting my favorite single origin, so I know enough about coffee and espresso to be dangerous. With my double boiler machine, one thing that always bothered me , is sometimes it could channel no matter how careful I was with grind tamping and all those other finesse things that we get trapped into. There are lots of opinions on why this occurs, and I have explored them over the years , but I have found a screen, pretty much eliminates any of my channeling problems. So now it came down to just a matter of thickness and mesh size . After quite a bit of testing this disc has become my absolute favorite. A great balance between being overly thick and taking up too much space or being so thin that it becomes flimsy and you get some grind splashing up around the edges. Turns out this is like the baby bear says , just right. I now have no more channeling , clean up is faster. My water screen doesn’t get dirty , nothing but positives. The last picture shows the three screens that I’ve been trying different styles different thicknesses so as you can see, I’ve been through a little bit of testing.

The overall build quality, and specifications of the MHW-3BOMBER puck screen impressed me.
I have definitely come to the conclusion that there is an advantage in using a puck screen when making espresso. I learned this using a puck screen on my old 51mm portafilter equipped espresso machine. What I objectively noticed was the shower screen was much cleaner, there was a reduction in puck channeling, and there also seemed to be a bit more crema. So it follows that a properly fitting puck screen would also improve the taste of the espresso. Also, the coffee puck seemed to pop out of the basket more easily, and in a more intact condition at the end of the extraction.I got this MHW-3BOMBER 58.5mm puck screen (with round hole) to use with my new Gaggia Classic Evo Pro, as it’s shower screen screw protrudes a bit. Unfortunately, when I first used it with the supplied standard 58.5mm portafilter & double shot basket, and loaded my usual 18 grams of coffee, the portafilter didn’t seem to want to fit on the coffee brew unit. Of course, if I cut down on the coffee amount, it did fit. I am not faulting the MHW-3BOMBER puck. I believe the supplied portafilter & double shot basket of the Gaggia Classic Evo Pro, has very little excess headroom to accommodate a coffee puck screen, even a thinner one (0.8 mm) like the MHW-3BOMBER (for my dark espresso dose, anyway).......Update 02-02-2024: Per a knowledgeable friends recommendation; I swapped from an espresso dark-roast to a medium dark roast coffee, and dialed the grind finer by one notch. Now the supplied standard 58.5mm portafilter & double shot basket, and MHW-3BOMBER puck fit the brew head of my Gaggia Classic Evo Pro just fine, even at my desired coffee dose (apparently darker roasts are typically less dense than lighter roasts, and take up more room by weight).I have also acquired a good aftermarket portafilter (bottomless) and an IMS double shot basket that has extra room. These also, in addition to using the MHW-3BOMBER puck, fit the brew head of my Gaggia Classic Evo Pro perfectly......Because the overall build quality, and specifications of the MHW-3BOMBER puck screen impressed me, I bought a second one as a gift for the biggest coffee enthusiast I know, who owns a La Marzocco (which also uses a 58.5mm portafilter, and it’s shower screen screw also protrudes a bit). He had once tried another brand of puck screen (thicker, and without the round hole) and it had not fit his La Marzocco properly, even though he was using an aftermarket portafilter and basket, that had more headroom. He fit the MHW-3BOMBER puck screen I had gifted him to the aftermarket bottomless portafilter he usually uses, loaded his usual dose for two shots (18 grams), and it fit and worked perfectly. He also was very happy with the results, and plans to continue using it in the future.

Does The Job Well
I've come to rely a lot on MHW-3Bomber products, they all have been well made and do a great job. This screen performs as it's supposed to, and has helped up my daily routine. Distributes the water evenly, and has helped reduce channeling. Definitely keeps the shower screen clean. Good quality, the machining of the holes seems clean and consistent, and it's sturdier than similar screens of the same thickness I've tried.
