An Island Summer: An absolutely gripping, emotional and heartwarming summer romance

Enjoyable
I enjoyed the little "mystery" that was written into this love story. I loved the friendship that happened between Rupert and the lead character. It was an interesting way to lead this reader to the end of the story. The ending wasn't too surprising.....I am not a romance reader...but overall, it was a relaxing, sweet book.

An Island Summer
A good sized novel with more than one love story. I truly enjoyed this book. The hint of mystery with the focus of truly finding oneself. Captivating!

A wonderful tale, needs weeding.
I nearly returned the book at 22 percent read, wondering if there would be a romantic lead, or even a plot. It’s a very good story! But I think you can do better telling it. To bring this almost nonstarter up a few notches, I’d suggest grabbing the reader’s attention much more aggressively. In the 1st sentence, paragraph, or certainly chapter. I’m thinking a sexy interlude , a witness of or dream about Hester’s death, etc. Establish some drama, tension, hints to the reader that there are fascinating secrets to discover. Jenny, I felt I was repetitively bludgeoned with the protagonist’s feelings of insecurity, indecision and penury.

It held my interest
I think I was rather mean only awarding this novel 4 stars because, on reflection, it held my interest throughout and is very well written. After 10 years as a waitress in NYC Meghan Gray returns to Hatteras Island in North Carolina, to live in her grandfather's cottage, accompanied by her best friend, Tess, and her dog, Charlie. Feeling lost and discouraged, she has abandoned her dream of becoming a chef. Back on the island, she soon meets Toby Meyers, a local businessman and his elderly grandfather, Rupert, both of whom have a significant impact on her life. Jenny Hale deals sensitively with Rupert's dementia and its repercussions. Her descriptive powers are impressive! She brings the characters and their environment to life, so that you feel you know them personally, including Charlie the dog. There is also an intriguing mystery which is gradually solved during the novel. This is a novel well worth reading.
