These rocks should work great for Z, N, or HO scale trains. I bought them for Z scale use but, there are a variety of sizes to choose from in one mold. Since getting this mold I have switched over to printing rocks with a 3D printer.

When I place it on a surface the mold does not lay flat due to the ridges on the back side being different heights. does that affect the castings?

Not sure I understand your questions, but I made a frame out of styrofoam and toothpicks to hold the mold level when I poured the plaster so it would dry level.

What is the size difference of scale HO and N?

An N scale foot would be about 1/16 of an inch long, an HO scale foot would be about 1/8 of an inch long. Example: a "forty foot" long boxcar model would be about 5-1/2 inches long in HO scale and about 2 3/4" long in N scale.

The detail and ease-of-use these rock molds provide cannot baby

There is honestly no replacement for woodland scenics rock molds. The detail they provide is amazing. Are used an inexpensive Hydro Cal, not the woodland scenics lightweight version and it dried within an hour, and produced amazing results. Great mold to make rocks for a train layout

I have been using toilet paper and white glue I make small balls and put them in the mold and put it in the hot air fryer on 325 F for a hour on hot air then work gloves and peel the mold off the rocks come out great !!
