If you are Islamic, this book is going to offend you.
I already have a copy of the Quran in English, and a book that describes and praises Islam and its history. I wanted one from the opposite angle and this book is clear, authoritative, and full of further reading (not all biased). Obviously well researched; obviously not even-handed (neither expected by me nor claimed by the author). I'd call it a solid beginning for anyone wanting to understand the negative view of Islam, with a rich roadmap for further study in that direction.~"I like to be open-minded. That's why I can't remember anything!"

Informative and entertaining read.
There isn't much I can add that all the other five star reviewers have said. So I will say only this, that Robert Spencer sources his subject well and knows his Islam. I have wondered why there are countless violent jihadis in the world bent on killing and dominating other peoples and their cultures which the media and politicians of our day don't seem to be able to answer except for saying that Islam is a religion of peace (this seems to be the non-stop mantra recited whenever some atrocious brutality in the name of Allah occurs). Robert answers this question and then some. I think many Muslims would learn from this book too. This book opened my eyes to the concept of the 'dhimmi' which is when an infidel lives under Muslim rule as a second class citizen in his own native country. This blew me away. No open expressions of ones religious faith allowed, no horse riding allowed, distinctive clothing required to distinguish non-muslims from Muslims, no building or repairing of churches of synagogues, no proselytizing etc. The list goes on. A wake up call to the evils of Shariah and therefore of Islam. I never knew how much Hindus and Buddhists were savagely persecuted under Islamic rule. This book is worth more than the price advertised. I would pay double for the information therein.

Still a devastatingly effective read
I had read this book years ago. I recently decided I wanted to read it again, but must have misplaced/lost it. So I went ahead and bought a used copy as a replacement.Wow - this book still really stands the test of time. The issues Mr. Spencer raised back in 2005 are (very unfortunately) still very much in play today. Not that you needed a reminder about the propensity for violence that some adherents to Islam perpetrate all too frequently, but I had forgotten (until re-reading the book) just why the propensity is there.I don't think you can read this book - especially the numerous direct quotations from the Koran and 'scholars' who've interpreted it - and honestly state that there's not an extremely disturbing foundation of violence established in this particular religion.

Honest and well researched.
Excellent and informative. The Author is biased as far as how he views Islam but his references are plentiful and he founds his opinions in fact. I have friends that have a ministry helping recent immingrants from Muslim countries and their opinion coincides with this book. If the immigrants are contacted early during their months trying to settle in the United States or Canada, they are receptive to assimilation. However if they form into groups and stick to their extreme religious/political viewpoints they become angry and resistant to accepting the life in Westernized countries.

Readers of this book would also enjoy "Jenna's Flaw"
This book is an easy to read guide to understanding Islam, Islamic history, the notion of jihad, and the threat the West faces due to the global jihad, which has been ongoing for fourteen hundred years. Those coming to Islam for the first time would find Spencer's book a valuable book to add to their library; the seasoned reader of Islam would find the book a concise summary of need-to-know information. As with any book by Robert Spencer, this will be delight some and anger others, yet it's a timely book and the claims made in it should be discussed openly and honestly.Readers of Spencer's insightful book would also do well to read "Jenna's Flaw," a novel about the death of God, the crumbling of Western civilization, and what the West must do to stop it.

Great reference for general Islam and jihad.
As the years go by, having purchased this book over a decade ago, I appreciate it more and more. It is full of clearly-explained, good information about the history of the "peaceful religion" and how it operates in today's world. Don't listen to people who disparage the author out of political bias: Spencer is well-researched, fair, but blunt about the realities and dangers of today's political situation. He tells it like it is, with a well-researched background. Essential reading for anyone interested in the real story of Islam and who wants to understand it better without reading ten books. Like me, you'll keep it around for quick reference.

Fantastic information for those wanting to understand more about Islamic ...
What an eye opener! I am careful to temper what I read about Islam knowing that it is not fair to lump every Muslim in to the same box. However, there is no doubt that we in the west must come to terms with the actual teachings of Islam and leave behind our fanciful wish that Islam is no different than any other religion. Fantastic information for those wanting to understand more about Islamic teachings.

Excellent book. Well researched. Well written. Highly recommended.
Great book. Extremely well researched and written. Spencer does not make accusations. He uses the Quranic texts directly and lets them speak for themselves. He also provides excellent recommendations for additional reading and research as you progress.Hating Spencer for revealing the actual, factual, literal words in the Quran exposes the agenda of the person hating on him. If you want to silence the truth and hide the facts, you are evil. The only honest reply is "yep, that's what the Quran says, and I believe it". If you can't say that...you probably shouldn't be a devoted follower of Islam if you are uncomfortable with Allah's message.

If you are not Muslim - I urge you to ...
If you are not Muslim - I urge you to read this book. It is the definitive highly accurate description of a Medieval religion and political ideology going back to the 7th century.
