Just A Click Away, Click Away, Click Away.
Prologue.Truth be told I am a splashy guy. I cannot wash a dish or pot without getting water all over the place. Paper towels are indispensable to me.The problem:Paper towels are always rolling around if not secured. At best falling off the sink, rolling merrily on the floor. Under cabinet holders inevitably get loose, screws fall out, or the ends are no longer secure. The solution:The Kamenstein Perfect Tear Paper Towel Holder.I had used a previous version. Small footprint. Nicely weighted to offset any pulling off of any towels. The unit itself NEVER tipped over or was unstable in any way. No skid. Small top non- removeable knob. Plastic base. Brushed stainless steel. Well-made. Sturdy.Similar wired bowed upright center spindle. An upright roll slides over the top. Held securely in place. The side metal rod helped prevent any accidental unwinding. Multiple sheets were available at one time. Only mild resistance to towel selection. The center spindle allowed free spinning of the towel roll. I never had any problem with any willy-nilly unspooling of more than I wanted.Someone must have had unraveling issues. Which prompted this new version. This unit has a non-scratch foam base which can retain water. Top knob a little longer. More snazzy IMHO. It adds a ratchet movement to the center spindle. The base seems heavier but not cumbersome. Same side securing rod. Grabbing a paper towel from the roll now produces a marked resistance. I have to REALLY want that paper towel. If I want more than one, they ARE available. I just have to put up with the noise of the ratchet, which while not thunderous (a la Telltale Heart) is not silent. That is the sole caveat. It encourages me to not grab more than I need.Epilogue.Its been a week. Pulling off more than one does produce pronounced rapid retorts:CLICK-CLICK-CLICK--CLICK-CLICKwhich can be heard in the next room. Not quite machine gun but machine. Being a tad hard of hearing it doesn't bother me. I get kind of a kick out of it. It's the holder's way of saying "keep your pants on they're coming." Crabby guy.The ratchet effect does slow how quickly I can get the towels - which is what it is supposed to do.But it does its job. Perfectly. Well worth the $19.99 price. A great value.Bottom line.If you don't like the noise or being slowed, get the earlier version.Just keep the base dry.

Perfect!
Ia nevr thought I would say that I love a paper towel holder but that is now the truth. The ratchet tear makes all the difference! This is heavy enough so that it doesn’t tip when tearing the sheets off. Best product ever!

Best one
I ordered 4 "perfect tear" type paper towel holders. This is the only one that was heavy enough to function properly. With this one, the base will stay put when you pull the roll and rip a towel off. The kamenstein brand is great. I had a previous version of this that was replacing that had lasted 20 years before it's one -handed functionality degraded.

The solution to the paper towel problems you didn't know you had
I didn't realize I was missing this in my life. I thought it was normal to either use two hands to pull an exact amount of paper towel from the roll, or take a gamble on a one-handed tear - what will it be today? Three-quarters of a sheet? Two sheets? One and a half with an awkward rip in the middle? It was paper towel roulette, every day. Until I went to my friend's house, and he had THIS. It was life-changing. It is different from other paper towel holders. The central spindle holds the paper towel roll under tension, so it cannot spin freely when you pull it. It offers gentle resistance with some satisfying clicks every few radians, to allow you to pull just enough to unroll what you want, then it holds the roll in place as you change the direction of your pull ever so slightly, to effortlessly tear your section away. With this you get perfectly measured towels perfectly torn along the perforations, every single time. It is a paper towel miracle. The base has just the right amount of heft to it to hold everything in place with no danger of toppling. The stainless finish is lovely, and matches the other brushed stainless things in my kitchen. There is a decorative insert at the very top, which gives it a finished look and does not get in the way of taking paper towel rolls on and off.I ended up returning the one I ordered on Amazon, but only because shipping was unexpectedly delayed and I found the almost-same thing locally for the same price. The Kamenstein I bought locally is identical to the one I ordered, except it does not have the little rod sticking up from the outer edge of the base. Some colors seem to have it, and others don't. I'm not sure what the purpose of that rod might be. With the tension of the spindle, it doesn't need any additional fulcrum to get a towel to tear off, and towels aren't exactly flapping around without it... not that the stationary rod would do anything to hold them down anyway, once the roll got narrower than the width of the base. My friend's Kamenstein has the rod, and all I've seen it do is get in the way when he tries to install a particularly wide roll of towels. So unless you have an extraordinarily breezy kitchen blowing your paper towels off their roll, and you plan to replace each roll as soon as it gets narrower than the holder base, I think the rod is pretty pointless.

Sturday paper towel holder
I needed to replace my paper towel holder and wanted something similar to what I had before and has purchased at a big box store. Decided to check Amazon, they have everything. Was not surprised to find the exact same holder as the one I had. Price was less expensive that the big box store and free delivery with my Prime Membership. Woo Hoo Score. Delivered the next day. Holder is very sturdy, you can do the one handed thing when ripping off the paper towel while the other hand is busy. Will fit any decor, sleek and fits comfortably on my counter. I am pretty neurotic about water spots and stains on the base, easily wipes down and comes to a perfect shine with a wipe of glass cleaner or even warm water. Will not disappoint.
