Around the forehead. Your ears are, to a point flexible. How I overcame the sizing issue was to use the sizing guide for a padded helmet like the ones used in various martial arts. I wear an XL padded helmet, and when I compared it the fencing helmet guide, arrived at a comparison size that is comfortably snug without being too small it doesn’t fit, or too large that any impact would send it askew and cost you precious response time.

Q: Can you bend the top metal flap?

Yes it can be bent, but it's not easy to do. It's a pretty stout piece of metal. You can bend it to make a snug fit for your head.
