They are high quality, first cut boar bristles.

Q: can you clean it if so how is the best way to keep it clean?

1. Comb out hair 2. Put shampoo and warm/hot water in plastic bowl. 3. Let the brush soak in the bowl for about 10 minutes (try not to get the wood wet if you can avoid it. 4. Get clean water and dip the brush in it until the water is clear. 5. Let the brush dry

Q: Which is softer? Extra soft or very soft? I want it to massage a thinning almost bald head.

The pearwood and olivewood military brushes with the light bristles have the same amount of softness. You will be satisfied with either brush.

Q: Have you noticed a slight fading of the wood finish on the top of the brush? A small area which is lighter color. Appeared after light use.

Yes, the wood finish changes overall color slowly from human touch and use. I did not experience a change of color in a small area.
