The noodles are not really head or extremely soft, they are made to support a swimmer in a pool. We have used them in our pool for years. They usually last about 6 months in the Florida heat and clorine,

Yes, they do have a hole in the center. I would guess maybe 1/2 inch wide. I hope this helps!
