My son and I do a lot of building block projects. This one has been great, so far. We have only completed the first two trains, but the directions are clear and detailed. My seven year old does the building. I just go through and find all the pieces he needs for each step. He built the first two trains, and didn't need to ask me for help on how anything fit, or getting any of the pieces to fit together. Believe it or not, those are common issues with sets like this. It's not because he is seven, either. Usually, it's due to the pictures in the directions being unclear. That has not been an issue with this set. The pieces are separated and color-coded for each step to show which blocks are already there, and which ones are being added. There are arrows indicating where the ends of the blocks need placed, and which way they should be facing. This set also has stickers that need added to some of the pieces as you build. The book shows which pieces get the stickers, and which way the stickers need to be put on. It's always a wonderful feeling to watch my son in his element without being deterred or frustrated by confusing instructions, or blocks not made well enough to stay together properly. This is a great set for children of any age above five. It's been a lot of fun for both of us. We are incredibly excited about making the ultimate robot at the end, but my son wants to build all of the trains first. I am pretty sure he is doing that so he can keep the ultimate robot without having to take it apart to build the trains. Lol.
