Not the best material for step 3
I could never get a good final polish using 500# Silicon Carbide as the pre-polish, it's incredibly hard to clean out completely afterward, so cross-contamination into step 4 is hard to prevent.Since I started using 500# Aluminum Oxide for step 3. My final polish step has been consistently shiny and successful. It seems that when Aluminum wears down quickly, and the sharp edges become smoother, while Silicon carbide is sharp much longer, so if a little grit moves from step 3 to 4, Aluminum Oxide grit becomes practically a polish over time, while Silicon Carbide grit will stick around for weeks continuing to scratch your rocks.
