Nicely Finished and Well Made
Much better quality than I was expecting. Well made with a nice smooth heavy black lacquer finish. Some of the reviews mention issues with damage or separation of the wood but this is a soap holder not a lather bowl. All though I could raise a lather in it I don't think that is the intended purpose. Its for holding soap for "loading" the brush. I sprinkle a couple of drops of warm water on top of the soap puck only and let it rest while preparing. After soaking the shave brush in warm water and giving it a gentle squeeze I lay the damp brush on top for a couple of seconds to rest. Load the brush by gently swirling and in a circular motion to load. I use a separate smaller palm sized bowl for lathering the loaded brush. That way the wood bowl is not soaking in water.

Very nice bowl
The bowl fits a "standard sized" soap puck very nicely, and looks like it's fairly well made. The lid fits well too. Nothing too fancy, just a well made bowl. Good for loading off a puck; I don't think it would work so well for actually building lather in it.

I love this soap dish
Beautiful and sturdy. No sign of paint chipping or peeling after weeks of daily useAlmost six months later this bowl is still like new. I'm still on my original 3.5 oz Taylor's of Old Bond St soap, which fits perfectly in the bowl. I rinse and wipe the bowl dry after each use. I expect it to last for years. Now, after more than two years of use the black lacquer is chipping a bit. The small chips come from the bottom of the bowl after the soap has been used to the point where the bottom is exposed. The outside of the bowl remains like new. The chips are not pretty in the lather, but do not seriously affect the functionality of the bowl. And after two years I cannot really complain. When I finally replace this bowl, however, I will likely get another wooden one that is not lacquered.

Good soap holder.
This is perfect for loading your brush. Keep in mind if you need more soap, the sides are shallow and you will likely get some lather over the lip.Fits the Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Hard Shaving Soap Refill, 3.5-Ounce very well. Snug when first putting the soap into it, but perfect for loading the brush. The soap comes very close to hitting the lid, but after a few shaves it should not be a problem.Just tip the cover off like in the photo to allow your soap to dry.Only downside to the black laquer was with a knot in the wood that has a slight crack on the lid. While a natural defect, would have been nicer if the crack was seen under the lid or on the bottom. Regardless, it poses no impact to the purpose of this item.
