Agatha Christie's Poirot: Feature Length Collection (Digitally Re-mastered) [DVD]

So beautifully done, only the packaging is a shame
These new Poirots are so well and beautifully done (5+ stars!!!). Yes, they are darker and more emotional (sader) than the short stories, mostly due to the soundtrack and the much deeper story. Murder, greed, jealousy or rage are sad things anyway. Poirot himself says in "After the Funeral" that he is interested in psychology: why and how do people things. But this enriches the whole series.David Suchet still dominates every scene he is in, and the supporting cast is simply perfect as well (and as always). No miscasted actor, no bad or exaggerated acting. The video quality is very good, the aspect ratio is 16:9 (the first 8 seasons or so were 4:3). The sound Dolby Surround (not 5.1).There is a "Behind the Scenes" feature on every of the four disks. But this is done not very well (3 stars): Granada obviously made ONE feature of one hour length and cut it into FOUR pieces. So in the "making of" on "After the Funeral" we get also information (spoilers!) about "Cards on the Table", the same with the other ones. Still, there ARE some features and we get to know from David Suchet how he approaches the Poirot figure.Packaging is a REAL SHAME (1 star): No information about the films (length, aspect ratio, sound, date of broadcast), no summary of the stories. To save space in your DVD shelf they let two of the discs overlap each other so you have to take out disc 2 to get disc 1. But after all it's the wonderful content that counts and not the inferior packaging box!

Good old whodunits.
Do you know, I've never read or watched any Poirot before, although I love Agatha Christie. I loved these films though. What I found fascinating too is that there's a documentary included on the Orient Express, with David Suchet doing a travel feature on the modern Orient Express, and looking at the features of the train and the trip featured in the book/film Murder on the Orient Express. I wasn't familiar with David Suchet either, and to see him, after watching the documentary, then transformed into Poirot was just brilliant - I'm glad I watched the documentary first! :D Don't skip the documentary - it really brings out how observant Agatha Christie was about fine details around her, and how well travelled she was.You need to pay attention, I find, with Agatha Christie's books - and with these three films (Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile and The ABC Murders), it's the same. I found myself wondering how Poirot came to a particular conclusion - which is of course what we are supposed to do, otherwise, he wouldn't be anything special!

Poirot Aficionados will love this collection...
Poirot: Feature Length Collection (Digitally Re-mastered DVD)Absolutely superb. A digitally remastered DVD collection of feature length films, starring the wonderful David Suchet as the inimitable M. Poirot, which contains :- Murder on the Orient Express; Death on the Nile; The ABC Murders. The first two are my favourite films so delighted to have them in this particular collection and the third is not to be discounted either, it's also a great film. In addition to the three films there are also DVD extras - over an hour of additions which include:- interviews with David Suchet - covering the making of Murder on the Orient Express/history and behind the scenes; also cast and crew interviews from Death on the Nile. These extras, in my opinion, are not to be missed - if you are a Poirot aficionado you will love this. There are three picture DVDs , nicely presented in a smart case, and 349 minutes of viewing time. Picture film quality is excellent. All in all an excellent purchase and really good value too. Well presented, well packaged with excellent Amazon delivery. Highly recommended.

So-so
Question: How do you top Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov, Kenneth Branagh?Answer: You don't!David Suchet's versions have been called "darker". Well, if "darker" means stoning a woman to death, being in bed with your lover, carrying a stuffed reptile around as a hunting trophy, that's a darkness I can do without.
