The pole comes in pieces that you screw together. So you can remove pieces to make it the length that fits your needs

Q: How wide is the arm to hold flag?

Mine held a banner flag easily and also a 2-1/2 ft x 4' wide american flag. It could possibly hold a 3 x 5 flag but a lighter flag will make it easier to keep pole straight. I bought rebars on amazon in an "A" shape as extra support for the base.
