Delighted with the Bible
Really pleased with the Bible.Apart from the Leather binding. this Bible is IDENTICAL to a hardback version which I purchased from Amazon and costs £13.65 The ESV-CE Catholic Bible, Anglicized: English Standard Version - Catholic Edition

High quality and a couple of grating changes
Beautiful quality. Lovely bible but mainly without footnotes. There’s some changes to language for clarity in modern English. I do not understand why something so central to Catholicism as “Hail Mary full of Grace” would be changed in Luke 1:28 ? I will try and edit this myself, it’s just too painful to read.

Do not buy
I received this package this morning and I was incredibly excited and eager to read an ESV, in which included the deuterocanonical books. As an Orthodox Christian, I wanted to use this bible, but I was disappointed and disgusted to find our that some of these verses were completely faded (Genesis 25:20-34, Genesis 26:1-19), so much so that I can't even read it, I am angry and I feel completely ripped off, my advice to any purchasers on Amazon, DO NOT purchase this product, unless you want to waste a lot of your money.

Beautiful text, beautiful book
Everything is just right for a Bible about this volume: the dignity of the translation (especially for reading aloud), the readability of the print, the feel of the book when held in the hand (I have the imitation leather edition), its lying-flat on a desk or lectern, gold page-edgings, etc. A truly worthy production. Well done, CUP!

Poorly bound - No Effective Quality Control. Typos too.
[This review's rating is for the shoddy construction of the Cowhide Leather version, and typos common to all editions, rather than the translation].This product is absolutely not a 'high quality Catholic Bible' as the CUP claim. The Cambridge Cornerstone ESV-CE Cowhide Bible I have just taken delivery of has two defects immediately noticeable upon opening. First, the pastedown has not been properly glued on to the interior of the leather cover, so there is a gap between the text block/pastedown and the cover. There is glue visible on the inside but it has not set properly. The gap would only become wider with use. Secondly on the rear pastedown on the right side of the edge of the leather there is sticky partially set glue. There appears to have been a problem with the composition of the glue used for the crucial job of fixing the text block in place by means of the pastedown. Executed properly this allows the bible to be a durable and longlasting resource. These are kinds of problems QC should pick up on before the item can be passed on to retailers for resale. Now I have the boring process of queuing up at the Post Office to return the item, and then reordering in the hope that the next one is properly made.>>>15/02/24: Return made and refund issued. I decided that ordering a second cowhide edition wasn't worth the risk, given my own experience and the other reviews pointing out the glueing problem. I chose instead the black imitation leather version. The bible arrived this afternoon. It seems to be well-made with no glue issues. I'm glad to have another Catholic bible in addition to the Douay Rheims, the RSV-CE (and a Knox NT). The text block is adequate, the paper is not as opaque as we have come to expect from CUP, perhaps because the text block is not from Cambridge at all but from SPCK by way of Harper Collins, and there is a fair degree of show through. I think the paper is supposed to be 33gsm, but if so it does not seem like it. The text block is the same found in the SPCK edition, so regardless of publisher or binding chosen, you get the same rather mediocre quality of paper. The typeface looks modern: the Milo font used is world away from Old Antique No.3. (Camb. KJV Turquiose). The imitation or faux leather is fine and the pastedown lining properly attaches the text block to the cover. Fairly supple, and the bible lies open without a fight. Another reflection of the lack of quality control is the presence of typos, page ix has three unecessarily hyphenated words, 'equiva-lence', 'read-ability', and 'excel-lence'. Another two similar typos on p.xi, one on p.xii, and one on p.xiv. Happily I have yet to come across any errors in the biblical text. Overall a 3/5 rating, structurally satisfactory but not an outstanding physical book; the typos are a another sign that care has not been taken. As for the 'premium' edition, the Cowhide leather was lovely, but the text block was middling, and the binding was so poor it proved to be anything but a quality edition. I have been reading the same daily passages in the ESV-CE and the RSV-CE, and not suprisingly, since the ESV-CE is the child of the RSV, the ESV-CE appears to be 90% identical to the RSV. Where there are differences betwen them the RSV-CE is, in my opinion, superior. I suspect the ESV-CE is more accurate, but the RSV-CE usually reads better. Cambridge's clam shell box is well-made and sturdy, although the company now favours matte rather than glossy finishes. To me the matte finish doesn't look quite so smart. In fine: the 'premium' cowhide edition was rubbish. Common to both the leather and synthetic editions is the middling quality of the paper, it is not sufficiently opaque. Likewise the lack of care taken in proof reading the Foreword, Preface, and Introduction is evident in both editions. There will be a Kindle version of the ESV-CE released by SPCK with which I will happily replace the physical copy reviewed above, only at the moment the release date showing on the preorder lisitng is for the 1st of January 2030.

A little disappointed
Beautiful bible, but a little disappointed because some of the pages in Genesis (and up to Esther, because that's all I've managed so far) are printed very feint, much feinter than the rest. With the print from the other side of the page it almost becomes illegible. Would have expected better for a beautifully presented Bible.

Badly glued binding
The font clear and line matched, and the cover is lovely and soft and feels premium. It's a text only bible with no introductions and only a couple of maps, which is as expected. My only issue was the text block was badly attached to the cover. Glue had seeped into the spine, meaning it bunched up and wouldn't lie flat on a table.Questionable QC in this case. If you get a good one, it'll be a very nice bible.
