African History for Kids
This is a great book about African History. Each chapter in this book covers one of the tribes in Africa. The book has lots of maps, pictures and as always, there are reviews after each chapter to help reinforce what they learned in each chapter. Captivating History makes learning so much fun that sometimes these kids don't realize that they are learning.

An excellent book to learn about some of the historical African Kingdoms
This is an excellent introductory book for Kids who wish (or whose Parents wish them) to learn about African History. The author gives succinct summaries of many, but not all, of the greatest kingdoms in Africa’s history. Many useful maps and notable pictures are also included. It also provides objective reviews of the Slave Trade and Colonization Efforts by the European countries in Africa. Each chapter tackles a single empire or topic and concludes with a short quiz to augment and check the reader’s assimilation of the subject. Answers are included! The quiz styles are varied in each chapter to further engage the reader. While I am unclear of what age group this book is aimed towards (probable late primary or early middle school), the author does offer brief explanations of many concepts or terms that could be difficult for young readers. Some words that may be too advanced still make it through into the text, though, and adults may need to assist with comprehension. The book would also benefit from a timeline showing the relative periods of existence of the different empires for context.Still, I find this to be a worthwhile endeavor at providing a historical overview of generalized African History for young people.

I am preparing an African history course for 4th grade students in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This book is very helpful in preparing accessible materials.

Excellent book on overall African history!
We mostly hear of the tragic modern history of Africa due to the submission by Renaissance Europeans. This book adds much more background about Africa from antiquity, long before contact by Europeans. For example, ancient Africa had the earliest-known fishing, jewelry, mathematics, animal domestication, and crop cultivation. This book includes ancient Egypt, but the greater focus is given to the numerous other African empires that we seldom or never hear about. This provides a much wider understanding of Africa’s overall importance to world history. For example, the kingdoms of Kush and Aksum show us the historical influence of Egypt that moved southward in Africa, instead of merely northward toward the Levant and Europe.African history is a treasure trove awaiting more scholarly involvement. For example, the ancient language of Kush has yet to be deciphered. The city of Axum in the Kingdom of Aksum is one of the oldest continually occupied cities in the world. In medieval times, the Ghana Empire was a major trade center for gold and salt (which were of equal value!). (Sadly, slave trade was included.) The Mali Empire likewise included major trade activity and was also well-known for farming. The importance of Islam and Christianity in Africa is also shown. There’s so much offered in this book that shows kids much more of Africa than we ever hear about: the Kanem-Bornu Empire, the Songhai Empire, and the medieval trade between China and Mogadishu. Colonization, enslavement, decolonization, and independence are also included. Plenty of maps and pictures. Each chapter is followed with a Chapter Activity to engage young readers with a continuing hands-on involvement. Great book for anyone of any age!

African History panarama
When you think of African civilization Egypt comes to mind but there are more kingdoms and empires to learn about. This book presents the panarama of Africa showing that Africa has had a history of cultural development as rich as any other region of the world. From the eastern horn of Africa to its western shore with the Atlantic ocean Africa has had some of the greatest empires in the world. This is a good book to introduce kids to richness of the "dark continent". You will read about Egypt, Kush, the Mali Empire, the Ghana Empire, Axum and more which were among the great powers of Africa. This book introduces great leaders of empires and men who shaped history. Written for kids grades 5 to 7 this book will interest parents and kids alike. The book has many maps showing where the many civilizations were and introduces the reader to the great achievements of some of the most powerful. European civilizations such as Rome and Greece traded with African kingdoms and this continued to the 18th and 19th centuries when European countries divided Africa. As a retired history teacher I highly recommend this book for use in the home and in school as supplement for social studies and reading. Until now there has not been such a resource available.

Anytime I purchase a book for someone else, especially a child; I read it first. I read this book, tore it up and disposed of it. I got better information from the Anheuser-Busch series, Kings of Africa. The book is of some interest, but I would suggest you fact check the information first, and don't dumb-down factual information you give to kids.
