Caravaggio and Bernini: Early Baroque in Rome

Excellent overview of Caravaggio and Bernini and their followers in Baroque Rome
The subtitle, Early Baroque in Rome, is a more accurate description of this excellent catalog for the exhibit at the Rijksmuseum, which covers a wide variety of artists. Five introductory essays are accompanied by gorgeous color illustrations on almost every page. The catalog entries are concise and informative, and each painting and sculpture (there are 84 by a variety of artists) receives a full-page illustration that captures all the subtleties of the work. The difficult-to-reproduce St. Francis in Ecstasy by Caravaggio sparkles, and even the dark background is clear and sharp, something I've never seen in any other illustration. There is a fine breadth of works (the Gentileschis, the Caracci, Bigot, Vouet, and many others are all represented), many not reproduced in other books. An excellent addition to the literature on Baroque art.
