Outstanding topwater lure for Gulf surf fishing
I recently tried this red-head and white Chug’n Spook Junior on a Florida gulf beach and was astonished at how well it worked. I was using a Penn Fierce 2 4000 with 18lb braid I had put on an old 7’ freshwater MH spinning rod, not an optimum surf rig, but living in the Midwest, it’s what I had and it worked pretty well. I was fishing late morning, on a partly cloudy day with light wave conditions.First, I was quite pleased with how far I could cast the Heddon, essentially as long as anything I’ve ever cast, given I’ve never used longer than a 7 foot rod. I honestly wasn’t expecting much given I was at a swimming beach, but I was able to reach some darker, deeper water about 125 feet offshore. I was surprised when on my third cast, a fish jumped at it but missed. Two casts later, I had a strike that didn’t miss and about 90 seconds later, landed a 20” weakfish. A couple of casts after that one I had 22" pompano on that bent my rod nearly double and was the hardest fighting fish pound-per-pound I’ve ever caught stripping line from my reel and taking over five minutes to land. Ten minutes later I landed a 22” bluefish.I had spent over $70 on a variety of salt water lures for this trip to Florida, and the only one I tied on the whole trip was the Chug’n Spook Junior (although the surf was too heavy on subsequent days to fish some other beaches we visited).I found it it did not seem to be as effective directly on the surface, but had good action if I held my rod tip down and kept it under the water a foot or two – – that’s how I caught all three of the fish I landed. The silvery white body of the lure had a lot of flash which I think gave it a pretty universal appeal, judging by the three different species of fish I caught.I had so much success with this one lure in a brief time that I’m planning on buying a longer inshore rod to use on future Florida trips when I’ll be able to spend more time at designated fishing locations rather than purely at swimming beaches with the family. I’m also going to pick up some Heddon Spooks in freshwater colors to use this summer on bass and pike. Highly recommended.
