Be aware!
Great game. Lots to do. One thing to be aware of - you need a Nintendo Online Subscription to gain access to all of the features. For example, People build and upload levels that you can play, and you can compete with players around the world to get the fastest time - you need the subscription to access this.

A great game with a small paywall.
Super Mario Maker 2 is one of the more unique games for the Switch boasting an almost unlimited amount of replay value. The game is a ‘do it yourself’ program where you are given a large range of tools and themes to create your own Super Mario levels. There are different types of terrains, blocks, power ups and even enemies that can be placed anywhere you want. It all works on a grid system and you place the item that you want onto the map until you create the level of your dreams…or something close anyway. The game also has several different level themes such as the classic overworld, underground, Ghost House, sky and even Koopa’s Castle. None of these change how the levels plays (although a couple will let you add water or lava) and are more for cosmetic reasons but it is still great to see all the different styles.Once complete you can upload your creation to the servers and in turn, play other peoples creations from amazing levels that wouldn’t be out of place in a real Nintendo game to insane levels that are created just to put you in a fit of rage. However, this is the biggest problem with the game, you NEED Nintendo Online. If you don’t then you can’t upload your work nor can you play other peoples levels. I feel this really is a disgusting move on Nintendo’s part as a big part of the first game was the community. It does have a single player campaign of 100 levels but they feel more like novelty ones that act as inspiration on what you could make. Also it should be noted that there is a tutorial system to help show you how to build your own levels or you can just dive in with no help.Graphically the game is pretty good with the ability to chose from several different level themes from the first game on the NES, Super Mario 3, Mario World and Mario U. There is a whole new theme too based on the Mario 3D World (the one with the cat outfits) but apart from a few gameplay changes it nothing overly special.Sound is of course fantastic with each style of game have the correct soundtrack for the game. For example if you select Mario World, it will play the Mario World themes. Sound effects are also great with some silly sounding ones you can add to the levels for a humours effect. So is the game worth it? I’d say yes with a but. The main focus of this game is to create your own levels so if that is not something you’d enjoy then there isn’t much here for you. The user created levels are interesting and are winnable (you have to finish your own level first before you can upload.). However, it should also be noted that you NEED Nintendo Online which may not be expensive, it still another cost to add to the game. An enjoyable and fun game overall though and will easily have new user created content for years to come.

Overall Amazing Game!
For people as creative as myself this game is incredible as it combines 2d mario games with the level design system to create the perfect mario game! In addition, the ability to change game styles to different games adds a level of immersion putting you i to the mind of a developer of a mario game.

Almost an endless amount of fun to be had
I'm a huge fan of 2D platformers, they're my favourite genre and I really liked the original Mario Maker, so I bought this knowing I would almost certainly enjoy it, but it has exceeded my expectations completely. There are so many ways to play this, it's crazy. I've made a handful of levels, but that would have taken no more than about ten hours, and I've logged in over 350 in total so far.Sometimes I feel like going through the newly uploaded levels to try and be the first person to complete them, others I'll go into the popular level section and try to get the world record. Occasionally I'll simply play casually and enjoy it as a standard Mario game. I barely get time to touch the other modes like endless run, vs mulitplayer, Ninji challenges etc but they're there, too! There's a huge variety of levels constantly being uploaded that I find it hard to imagine getting bored. There are speedrun levels, puzzles, traditional levels, music levels and more, across five different Mario game themes to satisfy you for whatever your favourite Mario game is.If you want to make your own levels, too, then the amount of fun and time you can sink into it increases tenfold.
