Great Counseling book!
I bought this book to go along with the Professional Counselor: A Process Guide to Helping. This book was an excellent choice. Perry's book is well written and funny! The chapters were easy to read and the book never claims to be the end all of counseling books. Perry provides excellent examples of the techniques and the skills that he discuss in this book. The living into the lesson are practical and help you understand the skills that Perry is trying to teach. I appreciated that Perry discussed the counseling techniques that he was competent in and that he encouraged the reader to get supervision in a therapy that the reader would like to practice.

Extremely insightful and helpful for a beginner
I must say I am extremely happy with this book. I am a beginner in counseling, and working in a school setting. I had many doubts about how to approach my work and how to plan the interventions. The author has really filtered years of experience and presented some very insightful concepts which otherwise will take lot of time for a beginner to grasp on his/her own. The structure of the book is great; the author's style is captivating; the examples and case studies are very explanatory.I will recommend this book for every beginning therapist!

Practical tools for the beginner counselor
Wayne Perry has written a book about counseling tools which he could not find elsewhere in the academic literature and has some good insights and practical suggestions. As a lecturer seeking material for students I liked for example the metasystems model of understanding the client in context, with a front and back stage, with issues needing to be addressed in counselling usually hidden, such as sexual abuse and self-mutiliation. The skills given to the beginner counsellor range from process skills, such as effective questioning to administrative skills, such as process notes, to clinical thinking skills, such as who is the client. A good combination of the theoretical with the practical.

Love this book!
Bought this for an elective course in my MSW program. I enjoyed the class and we really used the book from front to back. This book has a lot of usuful information if you are looking to understand some basic techniques and some of the information will be good if you are planning to have a practicum that allows you to provide direct services to clients.I plan on keeping this text and not selling it back because of all the information that you can gain from this book. Im glad that I took the course because of this book!.

Good content but digital version has very poor formatting
So far the content of the book is good, but the digital version is nearly unreadable. If you want this book, get the physical version. I lied the cheaper price of the digital version, but on my tablet the formatting makes highlighting and saving passages impossible. What's the point in a book of this nature if you cannot highlight??

Excellent Refresher
Counseling Techniques was very helpful! As a beginning therapist, this book provided me with techniques to feel more confident with my clients. It was comprehensive and explained theories in an academic and easy to understand manner. The dialogue between the writer and the clients was extremely helpful. Highly recommend as a refresher and for students.

Useful text
Lots of practical and immediately useful materials for both the beginning and seasoned therapist. The author undermined some of his authority and credibility by constantly using the word tenant when he actually meant tenet. However, I chose to ignore this mistake (and other sloppy grammatical errors) and focused on what I could use from the book. Highly recommended.
