I am a heating professional, and this book was essential to my education, and I still use it for troubleshooting. He uses simple terms and visual examples to explain the physics of steam. Interesting stories about the early days of our industry and troubleshooting war stories are interspersed throughout . A simple, non-technical book every tech should read.If you own a steam system the information is in here, but never hire a contractor for it who hasn’t read this book

A must read for anyone with steam heat at home!
What else but praise can one have about this steam heating bible? For anyone wanting to learn about the fascinating technology which revolutionized heating and is still wide spread in North America (think large NYC or Chicago apartment buildings), this book is essential. For anyone dealing with steam heat at home, this book should be purchased and studied, then left with the house for the next owner. It will help you, the home owner, custodian of the technology of yesteryears, to party like it's 1922 again, all the while making you understand how to optimize your heating system and fool proof you against the general lack of knowledge about these systems in today's pro hvac community. The writing is easy to understand and concepts of steam technology explained in plain words, no prior technical knowledge is necessary. For bringing back to us the understanding of the Art of Steam Heat, Dan Holohan is a national treasure.

If you only buy one steam heat book, this should be it
We bought an old fixer-upper house last fall, and ran the steam heat all winter while we were doing painting and repairs, without really understanding how it worked. This winter we'll actually be living there, and with the help of this book, I've learned the proper care and feeding of steam boilers and how to balance the heat for our needs - from single pipe back bedroom radiators to the two pipe kitchen Baseray baseboard. Whether you are a home owner or a heating contractor, this book has great information, aiming to help you understand the principles of how a steam heating system works so that you don't make silly errors in operation or installation which would be dangerous or detrimental to correct function. Humorous anecdotes help to keep the mood light in a technical presentation. Extensive end notes are given for further reference. The best resource I've found on making an old steam heating system work.

Invest in your mind. This has been said to be one of the best steam heating books on the market
I have watched Dan's video presentations that he done at public events and learned a lot, now I have the book to go even deeper. Steam heating is a old type of heating that has been overlooked until you go to repair a steam system and find that you should know more about it before you start adjusting things. I have been in HVACR for 26 years yet I haven't worked a lot of steam systems. This is the perfect book to help learn the things you didn't know you needed to know.

If your home has radiators...
It is amazing in the year 2017 that you can find useful, period information on ALL facets of how your home is heated if you have steam radiator heating. The author shows the information that was widely available 100 years ago or so and interprets it in todays language so that a homeowner can see how all of the components work together. MOST important is that he shows how time/remodeling/age etc. has probably reduced the maximum heating value of your steam heating system. In simple language, you are shown the many small steps that any homeowner can do to get that system working in the fine, original condition that it was meant to be. Buy this book NOW and you will have a warmer (and probably cheaper) heating season this upcoming winter!
