Q: do these come in a tin.

No,they come in a plastic bag and that bag is put into a bubble-pack envelope. I think they are a great value.

Q: I don't know how to use it. I got the little poles in the tin. What do i do now?

Here is instructions of how to use this ferro rods. 1. There is a layer of black paint on the ferro rod to protect the ferro rod. Please scrape off the black paint before using and make sure that you have scraped the inner part when making the sparks. 2. Angle between scraper and the ferro rod can't be larger than 45 degree 3. The scraper is very important. If you don't have a good scraper for using,the back of a utility knife blade is a very good scraper to get enough sparks from the ferro rod. You can have a try. Q: Has anyone attached to a boot lace and then placed under the laces?

I would venture to say that they are much too large for that. Besides, there is only one hole on one end, you'd need one on each end to properly hold it in place. Q: How different is it in performance compared to the Bayite Ferrocerium rod (the 6 inch length ,12.7 mm diameter one)with 9ft paracord ???

The material of the 2 products is the same. The big one is easier to get sparks because of more interface with scraper. However, if you believe your scraper is excellent, you can also get tons of sparks from the small rods. The blade of an art knife is a good scraper.
