This is a great book. Since I first opened it, I cannot put it down! Every time I have a few minutes free I find myself picking it up and reading it. I always say I'll read just a couple passages or so, but I end up reading page after page! Jimmy Akin has put together a great book!I warn you now, if you do not wish to become Catholic, do NOT read this book! It will push you into the Catholic Church! I'm a convert to Catholicism and this book as greatly strengthened my faith! I already had a good grasp on the teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Church but this has increased my knowledge greatly. It is amazing to be able to read the Church Fathers and see what they thought about various issues.I very highly recommend this book to all faithful, Catholics and Protestants alike because it will open you up to the faith like never before. If all were to read this book and others like it may well bring an end to the anti-Catholic attitude of today. It's well worth the money and the wait for it to arrive!

I got this book, because I thought it was written from an Eastern perspective on the traditions of our Church Fathers. But it has the flavor of the Western Church, not to say that is necessarily a "bad thing," but let the buyer beware. But I really enjoyed this book to gain knowledge of the Early Church..

I bought this book with an interest in getting more knowledgeable about the Church Fathers. For this purpose it is good, and yet it isn't. This book really is there to provide material for Catholic apologists to demonstrate the fact that the early Church was Catholic. This the book does admirably, covering the various different parts of Catholic dogma that are most hotly contested today, varying from abortion to asking saints for intercession. For each topic there's a bunch of patristic quotes, going from earliest to latest. This provides an excellent way to be able to quickly find this sort of stuff. However, this book really should be used only as a starting point for studying the Church Fathers. The book really is crammed full of the various quotes (which are excellent), so unfortunately Jimmy Akin didn't really have much room to get too much into the various fathers. Yeah, he does give a pretty good basic overview, but when you compare it to some other introductions to the fathers such as Pope Benedict's Church Fathers, it pales in comparison. Still, I can't really fault Jimmy Akin for that too much, as a lot of information did have to be crammed into this book. However, I still have to take off a star because the advertising gives the impression that there's a lot more than just a basic overview of the different fathers here. Overall though this is an outstanding book if you have any doubts as to whether or not Catholic dogma really is from the early Church. It's elegantly designed, and an easy read. I heartily recommend it.

Jimmy Akin covers the history of the Church Fathers and demonstrates the reason behind our christian faith which are not expressed explicity in the bible but the tradition given to these men by the Apostles themselves and their successors. It covers the Trinity, the church, The Primacy, Mortal sins, abortion, contraception, homosexuality, what are the Sacraments, what the Church Fathers thought of Mary, sabbath or Sunday?, Salvation, Purgatory, Hell, Reincarnation, the AntiChrist and many more topics.I recommend this book fervently and always remember the water is always purer next to its source. 2,00 years of faith and explanation from the Church Fathers themselves, not some modern day self professed bible theologians making up opinions.There is a lot of wisdom and eternal knowledge on our relationship with God the Father and the Son from these men.A must read for all who wish to go as far back to the first christians and learn why things are or done.

This book is easy to read, full of excellent information, and clarifies in detail, the truth of what was happening in the early Christain Church. The book covers many Christain teachings, and traces them back the Jesus, himself! This is a must for any Christain library.

If you are looking at this book, you need to purchase it and read it. Even if you are not Catholic you will learn about the early fathers that helping spread the word of the Lord.

This book is structured in a clear and comprehensive manor and gives a broad overview on controversive topics, of which you can choose anyone anytime. Never the less it doesnt lack any evidence I suppose. It seems like Jimmy Akin presents all sources of the Church Fathers he could find cooncerning the topsics mentioned in the book. "The Fathers know best" helped me in standing firm in my catholic faith because it provides the historical evidence of what the first christians believed and what threrefore most likely the true teaching of christianity is. The book was just the one I looked for. I would recommend it to anybody who has doubts about the legitimacy of catholic doctrine. Especially protestans might be surprised of what the first christians really believed. I would love to have this or a similar book in German as well.

This 450 page book is just what I was looking for. Well researched without getting too technical. A good approach with sections on themes, The Fathers and Councils, and relevant to today.Can be read as a book or used as a handbook with easy to find history, topics and people.

I bought this book back in 2014 as I was curious about the Catholic Church. I was a former Pentecostal who had deep issues with Catholicism and was very critical. This book helped answer some of the questions that I had about Catholicism. It was then I began to see the truth of Catholicism. I soon joined a RCIA group and was received into the Church at the Easter Vigil 2015.I would strongly recommend this book to those who want to know more about Catholicism and those who are Catholics that wish to defend their faith. It is a great introduction to patrology.
