Not quite superman, but on the right tracks
I bought these after looking round the options for improved hearing or listening devices, with the admittedly guilty intention of listening to conversations, just out of curiosity, (of course). But mainly for my Nan. These looked like one of the better products compared to some cheaper ones, that were closer to kids toys There's also much more expensive items in the style of headphones, mainly for watching TV wirelessly .They are stated for that intention though as well as a sound amplifier for all types of background noise. Including outdoor sounds like traffic or birds and of course conversations. They also looked more practical in some ways than a hearing aid,in the way that they take AAA batteries, can be used with earphones and also that the volume can be easily adjusted from the side of the device.Making it easy to use for someone elderly and for the price seems to be much more reliable and performing than some of the in-ear devices sold on amazon.I tried this myself beforehand just to check that it worked, i wasnt sure what to expect, as i would say i have normal to good hearing and am use to listening to things generally at quite low volumes. So i thought that this might turn me into Clark Kent or something, it was interesting to say the least. First i could hear myself breathing, then walking, then it sounded like i was having my very own party just with the cruel absence of actual people. Just lots of birds (no pun intended). It went pretty loud and made the tv sound like a cinema, i dont know if it only picks up certain frequency's, therefore making it better for people with bad hearing rather than better, but it does pick up voices pretty good. Getting to the point, i did finally allow my nan to try this, and straight away she noticed a big difference watching tv and was able to turn the subtitles off straight away, which are something she always has turned on. She also said that the volume went very loud on the device, were with me it just amplified everything and gave me a cinema experience. which is why i think this may work better for someone with already bad hearing rather than good. However i will check this and edit my review in next few days it isnt this good, but im pretty sure it is. And it definitely goes loud at 50+ db, but BE CAREFUL IF USING WITH DECENT HEARING OR THE HEADPHONES (not earphones) SUPPLIED. AS AT FULL VOLUME I CREATED INTERFERENCE WITH HIGH FREQUENCY AND NEARLY DEFFENED MYSELF. In a high pitch sqeaking noise, like what you would get from a stage microphone........but in your ears. Dont be put off by this though, it just seems like the over- headphones supplied aren't quite up to the task at full volume, and i tried a broken pair causing the same effect, but at full volume which is pretty loud. Other than this though the product is quality for the price and is also very loud and clear..

Easy to use and very effective
Bought for elderly mother who is very deaf, has dementia and in nursing home. She kept losing hearing aids, think she finally flushed down toilet, and as she is so deaf it was impossible to have conversation with her and she was always miserable. Since getting this easy to use devise, she can hear every word ( she even told me not to shout!) and her quality of life is much improved and she now has a smile on her face. Brilliant product.

First Impressions
This arrived quickly on Amazon Prime and of course I couldn't wait to try it out ;)So it's nicely packaged and comes with the amplifier, carry case, a set of ear buds, batteries and a pair of lightweight headphones. I don't like ear buds too much so this is based on the headphones.Getting started is easy. Put the batteries in, put the amp in the case, plug in the headphones (or buds), lower the volume and switch on. Gradually increase the volume while someone is talking to you and the effect is startling in how much better you can hear what they are saying. In no particular order, some observations:- since the unit is designed to send output to both ears, it would be improved by having a balance control since very few people would have equal deafness in both ears- listening to music is not ideal and it is not designed for that purpose. Sound appears to be attenuated at both ends of the spectrum to work in the mid range which is where voices and standard tv sets operate. Replacing the supplied headphones with a pair of sennheissers confirms this is not caused by the quality of the supplied headphones but is a factor of the amplifier itself- the supplied headphones are very light and likely to be comfortable to wear for long periods but the device is very convenient for access to the controls so you will probably turn it on and off as needed to conserve battery life. It does have an auto-off but if you are watching a movie a simple press of the button would reactivate it.- it's rather bulkier than a modern mp3 player but not by a lot- it won't really help with telephone conversations unless you use speakerphone. A custom handset or in-ear hearing aid would be needed for that purpose- the case has a belt clip so it is easy to stick in a pocket or attach to clothing. It doesn't need pointing at the person talking- having the use of AAA batteries is a major plus for me over those tiny button batteries which usually only last minutes rather than hours or daysThat's it really, a nice procuct which does what it claims - improves your ability to hear people talking or watch TV without deafening everyone else. It doesn't do what it never claimed to do but then, neither do most of us either ;)

It works, but.....
This is fine if used for one purpose, watching television, having a conversation etc., but not together. If you are watching television and someone speaks to you, their voice becomes too loud. But if it's set for conversation, it's fine , but only for that purpose.

Fragile on/off button (plastic!)
My mother is very deaf. In the house this has been a godsend as wearing her aids for long periods causes recurrent ear infections. I have now (May 19) just bought my third unit, the last one was purchased Aug 16 and just like the one before it has failed because the on/off button on the front is cheap thin plastic. When you press it it has two tabs that press on connectors on the circuit board to turn the machine on/off. The problem is that with repeated use and plastic becoming brittle the tabs on the plastic button break rendering it impossible to turn the unit on/off. The manufacturer needs to address this issue by EITHER replacing the plastic button with a metal one that won't break or changing the on/off from a push button to a sliding switch. When it works its fine and my mother has benefited with improved quality of life but for £60+ I do not expect to have to replace every 2 or 3 years
