I used these for my model railway. I was able to slightly modify them to work as an electro magnetic to operate N Gauge couplings.

Nice little solenoids with spring return.Although these are rated at 12V they should only be used at this voltage on a very low duty cycle, otherwise they will cook.They are however extremely easy to engage and will move with as a little as 2V (350ma), if you don't need much holding power a 12V pulse followed by a lower holding voltage after the field saturates might extend that duty cycle.Don't forget your flyback diode!
