I take with Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) Powder. Biochemist Bruce Ames of UC Berkeley said his research showed acetyl L-carnitine was fuel for sluggish, damaged, aging mitochondria (which convert sugar into chemical fuel for cells), thus should boost energy levels, but accelerated mitochondria were then producing even more free radicals, which were further damaging the mitochondria. Alpha lipoic acid was a powerful antioxidant that neutralized the free radicals and protected the mitochondria. So they should be taken together. Supposedly slowed down natural aging by boosting slagging mitochondria and preventing further damage to them.Thought it worth a try, so have been trying in bulk (cheapest way to take the stuff). Boost in energy has been minor (perhaps just placebo effect). Hard to say if getting any benefit, so hard to review. Boosting metabolic rate by increasing mitochondrial output should theoretically help lose weight, but I haven't noticed that.Stuff came as advertised and is cheap compared to competing products. Don't see any impurities in the powder. One problem with powder form vs. capsules is getting it down. Alpha lipoic acid is just that, an acid, and very sour and astringent. It will burn your gullet taken straight. Acetyl L-carnitine isn't as bad, but still not great tasting. You have to mix both with something to get them down. I use about 2 ounces of frozen orange juice. Makes for a sour orange juice, but gets the job done.

I take 1000 mg twice a day on top of a OTC (off patent) diabetes medication. If you can can smell metabolized artichokes in your urine you will smell this. It's a sulfur compound. and metabolizes very quickly. I keep a tight watch on my fasting sugar because I changed from metformin recently to overcome gastric issues. I can say that it works. Fasting sugar mean is down 30 or so points and is steady.You should research the use of this if glucose control is your goal.

This is not a supplement suitable for adding to food or a smoothie or anything. Stick with capsule form as the bulk powder burns lips and mouth like eating black peppercorns and has a foul smell and taste that can not be diluted or covered up based on everything I've tried. 73.00 lesson learned for me.

Do NOT buy from any company willing to sell ALA and NOT tell if it is S-ALA or R-ALA. The synthetic ALA is useless placebo at best.Do NOT buy from any company that hides their return policy and makes it ineligible AFTER the fact.I will never buy from bulksupplements again AND amazon should have a setting that hides all the products of a sham seller like them.
