BECKER centers on the life of Dr. John Becker, a cantankerous, yet dedicated and talented physician, who, in spite of his constant rants, has a decent heart underneath the sarcasm. BECKER will continue to unleash his views at the local diner, even in Reggies continuing absense. Jake (Alex Desert), the blind proprietor of the local newsstand continues to turn a deaf ear to John. Bob, Beckers brash, obnoxious apartment super (Saverio Guerra), persists in annoying virtually everyone. At the office, Beckers head nurse Margaret (Hattie Winston) continues to make order out of chaos, keeping John and his space-cadet nurses-aid Linda (Shawnee Smith) in line. New to the neighborhood is Chris Konnors (Nancy Travis), Beckers new neighbor, with whom he must contend on a daily basis. Although her positive attitude is a major annoyance to Becker, he slowly begins to have feelings for her. John Becker is a cynical Harvard Medical School graduate who is somewhat of a loner and has trouble letting people get close to him. He looks at the world around him and feels society has gone mad - full of inconsistencies and just plain backward thinking. Although he is a diagnostician by trade, Becker feels he can dispense diagnoses even when no one asks. He has no qualms about saying what comes to mind, never sugarcoats his opinions and often seems to offend somebody nearby. However, his friends and colleagues recognize the heart beneath the hate and so accept his gruff demeanor for what it is.

John Becker, The Doctor, The Man
Becker is a hit US show, starring Cheers front man Ted Danson; he's a doctor in the Bronx who's got a small doctor's office. He's obnoxious, difficult, and most of all doesn't like his patients. He's got his friends Jake (Alex Désert) and Reggie (Terry Farrel) and works with outlandish Linda (Shawnee Smith) and Margaret (Hattie Winston), who's got to be in control.Series one is a great series, we get to see Becker's more human side in the pilot, when he's got to treat a HIV positive child. Saying that, we also see his rage when he looses it with a patient when he makes a house call. Some of the best episodes include Sex In The Inner City, where Becker can't get away from people who are having sex, and he feels a bit left out by it all. Tell Me Lies where Reggie keeps Jake and Becker wondering what's wrong with her, and proves that Becker is nosey. I also loved PC World, where Becker gets caught out by a PC reporter that reports that John is racist and a totally unpleasant person to have to get medical attention from. This really annoys Becker. This is a great show, and I'm really glad Paramount have changed their mind and released it. The tension between Becker and the rest of the world are funny, and the relationship he has with Reggie is starting to develop. Bob finally turns up half way through season 1, and it's a great moment. Bob did add that extra je ne sais quoi to the show.I also like the way we are lead to think Becker is a nasty man, when really he's very caring - and has good intentions, even though he hates to show that side of himself.Definitely buy this, it's worth every penny, I've seen this series over 5 times now, and it's not getting boring.

The doctor will see you now
American comedy and how to do it well. The moment i saw this box set of series one on Amazon i just had to press the buy button. If you are already familiar with the John Becker character i can promise that you will not be disappointed and to those unaware of Becker if you love typical dry sarcastic American comedy this ones a winner. Basically Ted Danson plays Dr Becker as a GP doctor operating in a poor district of town and continually clashing with so called friends in the near by cafe and his well meaning staff in the surgery, not to mention some of the patients that try Johns patients up the wall. Incredible series that stands the test of time.

The Best Series ever
Just loved this series when it came out. My copies seem fine, some other reviewers seem to have problems. Do not think the quality of the recording was that good when I watched the original series on TV. This series is no good for anyone who is politically correct, as Becker is so 'politically incorrect', but just wonderful. I just wish the other Seasons were available to buy on DVD here. Maybe someday!

One of the few ALL Time classics..the humor doesnt grow old!
If you re going to buy just 1 classic show make sure its this one. UNlike other classics the humor hasnt grown old over time which is not something that can be said of other so called classics. I would rate this as one of my top 5 tv shows of all time! Cant wait for the rest of the seasons to be released!
