I read this book in like four days. As jiujitsu practitioner and coach it was great. As a student going into mental health it was also great. I want more!

well informed book
The authors do a good job at explaining how instructors can be trauma-informed. I liked that it wasn't trying to teach bjj instructors how to be certified therapists, it just discussed how instructors can be trauma informed and how teaching styles and environments should be flexible for all types of people coming in.It is also a good resource for trauma victims of all levels to become familiar with BJJ before entering a school.

5 stars for picking a gym alone.
There are tons of BJJ schools, not all of them are equally informed on trauma.I have dissociative identity disorder and train BJJ now for over 12 years. So few people understand living with trauma, fewer still understand training through significant trauma.Read the author’s suggested interview questions for coaches and schools. There are at least a couple worth the price of the book if it saves some heartache on spending more than a trial class or two at the wrong school.Good luck!

Almost really good.
The authors spend a lot of time going into topics that are clearly out of their wheelhouse. If they'd kept the discussion relative to the title of the book and their professional backgrounds, it could have been 150pgs shorter.Instead, they get into giving out advice for how to conduct classes using terms like "muscle memory" and "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" in the same manner that people who haven't educated themselves on those topics use them.If they do a re-write, and leave out the parts giving technical advice regarding coaching and stick to how coaches can use the techniques and considerations found in therapy sessions to make sure their school is as safe and welcoming as it can be, I'll read that. Maybe I'll come back to it and just skip those parts.

Essential reading for all BJJ instructors or school owners
I am a full time BJJ instructor, and understand that jiu-jitsu has an incredible capacity to enhance people's lives, I have students who have definitely found therapeutic benefit from training jiujitsu. As a teacher of jiu-jitsu and practitioner for over 2 decades, I hope that as many people as possible can benefit from it as I have, and making jiu-jitsu accessible to as many people as possible means following best practices that allows trauma survivors to feel safe and comfortable within a jiu-jitsu school, as the practice itself can feel intimidating, just getting through the door can be an achievement for some. This book provides essential guidance on how all jiu-jitsu schools ought to operate, to best serve their members and potential members, and also gives explanation of how jiu-jitsu can be an incredible form of therapy for so many people. While just like injuries we cannot eliminate triggering individuals while practicing jiu-jitsu we can at least do our best to minimise the possibility. And know what can be done if it should occur. The information and guidance in this book will prove invaluable to any jiu-jitsu school.
