Q: No gears? Plastic parts anywhere?

No gears, it uses a flex drive shaft to turn the stirer so you dont have to fuss with the gears getting realigned! It is so easy to use, very smooth to stir. The only plastic part in the hole thing would be the handle/knob you use to turn, but it is not cheap plastic it is very sturdy. By far the best stove top popper i have ever seen! My favorite part is the magnetic lid lifting rod on it so when you pour your popcorn you dont have to hold the lid open!

Q: Since stainless does not conduct heat well, I am concerned about the bottom of the pan. Is it just stainless or is there aluminum to conduct heat?

The bottom is aluminum clad, so it transfers heat evenly. The pan has no difficulty heating up, I us organic coconut oil, and nearly every kernel pops. I hope this answers your question.

Q: can you add flavoring to the pot after the popcorn is popped like chocolate or carmel?

Yes, flavoring can be added at the last part of cooking time. I recommend doing a smaller batch of popcorn to make sure there is plenty of room for everything to mix together. We use flavocol kettle and caramel corn that you add to the unpopped kernels in addition to pour over that you add after popping is finished.

Q: Where's a photo of the stir rod? I'm wary of flimsy ones.

The stir rod is what broke on ours. It didn't last even 10-15 uses.
