HP ScanJet Pro 3500 f1 Flatbed Scanner (L2741A)

In less than a month my husband has already scanned more than 500 antique and more recent family photos with it, dating from the 1890's to present. It is portable and has allowed him to work on this masssive and still-incomplete project in various locations. The photos have provided us many a fun jaunt down memory (and pre-memory) lane as they are projected in slide shows on his computer screen. The scanner is perfect for this application.

I purchased this scanner in March 2017. It worked well as a scanner. I used it mainly to scan documents for a home business. The document feeder was a key feature for me and that worked well also, although occasionally a document would need some extra help to make sure a few pages get fed into feeder correctly before the software timed out. By the summer of 2018 scans started to show a black stripe about 1 inch wide on the left side. It didn't matter whether I used the flat bed or the document feeder - the black stripe occurred with both. Cleaning the scanner did not help. HP was not helpful and it does not seem to be possible to get the scanner repaired. If it were under warranty then HP would replace it. I realize that it is out of warranty after 1 year, but considering it cost me $440 I think this is way too expensive to only last 15 months. I would have even been happy if HP offered to replace it at a discount for whatever price it costs HP to make it. I would not recommend this scanner to anyone and when I replace it in early 2019 when I have the money, I won't be buying another HP.

By comparison the one we were replacing was huge and heavy. This costs less and is faster ... go figure. The computer interface is a little clunkier but it works fine. It goes to sleep sometimes and I have to power it back on but it comes up fast so that is no big deal and maybe that will extend its life. We've only had it a few months but so far so good - we use it every day.

This is a great scanner but it lasts exactly 2 years before it crumps. The first one did and I thought it my be a fluke. My office manager loved it so much I bought another. Here we are...just over 2 years later and we're having issues. No more for us :(

does 2 sides faster than my old one does one side and the sheet feed is awesome.

This was a great a scanner, until it broke. I barely used it over a year period, but one day a bulb burnt out (I'm assuming) and now there is a giant black bar across every scan. And no, it's not from dust. I cleaned the glass and it's spotless. I don't know how such a poor quality product is so expensive.

Scanner very good, HP scanning software definitely sub-par. Scan files are gigantic and basically unusable for small business since they need to be emailed. Was forced to acquire software from another vendor to compress output files, so now sort of a two step process. Major step backwards on software from previous HP two sided scanner.HP scan software also inverts some documents when there is an image on a printed page. This is much more of a problem than with previous HP scanner.Very disappointed in the HP software necessary to make this product function.
