Better than the CDN DTQ450X
Hey all- so I've had a CDN thermo for about 6 months now based on the recommendation of The Sweet Home and Cooks Illustrated. It was pretty great to start, right price, very accurate (for my uses). Overall, a great little tool at a great price. But recently, I've found it to sometimes be very jumpy and slow to take a temp. Sometimes in chicken breast it will jump +/- 30° in a reading as the thermo moves around. I'm not sure if it's because the shaft is being heated by the ambient heat from the pan or if there is a loose connection or what. Also, I've always felt the probe on the CDN was a little too short, I'd always be almost burning my hand trying to take a temp on some stovetop chicken because you have to hold the bulb in place directly above.Anyway, these things were getting annoying so I was thinking of making the plunge into a Thermapen, putting it on my holiday list (because its so pricey), etc- however, when I was on amazon, I saw this item, the Thermawand, a new thermometer that is clearly putting itself directly up against the Thermapen. At only $24.99 I figured I'd give it a try.It just came last week and I've only been using it a bit but I already love it.All the following is in comparison to my use of the CDN:- its more comfortable and intuitive to use, by extending the temp sensor wand it turns itself on, when you close it, it turns off. No buttons.- much bigger, easy read display- overall length is a little longer than the CDN, so you can hold it further away from the heat.- you can use it when the probe is at an angle so you can avoid your hand being directly above the heat/splattering oil.- feels well built. My best friend has a Thermapen (the $96 one) and comparatively, they feel very similar in hand and operate very similarly. The thermapen does have the appearance of being more waterproof/sealed, but otherwise, they are very similar.- product design is much nicer looking than CDN, and this one has color options- For an inexpensive tool, it comes in nice packaging which is a plus!So anyway I did some initial really basic "testing" head to head with the CDN. I put some water on the stove to boil and made a cup of ice water. I then simultaneously put each thermometer from one temp extreme to another a few times back to back to see how quickly they adjusted. The Thermowand was about a half second or more quicker every time and more importantly, it was also quick to stabilize and overall more stable. The temp reading on the Thermowand was not as "jumpy" yet it was still reading in real time, as when I held it in the pot of water, I watched it creep up second by second. The actual numeric readings between the two would vary about a degree, but this wasn't a big deal to me.I know part of the "jumpyness" could be attributed to the fact that the CDN is technically a bit more sensitive than the Thermowand- however, I'm not talking about being jumpy within a degree or so. I'm talking about being jumpy +/- 5 to 10 degrees- which is a meaningful difference, especially if you are aiming for a specific doneness and want to know a temp with more certainty.Anyway- my testing was far from extensive- but since none of the review sites have been updated- I wanted to give this company some love.It is about $7 dollars more expensive than the CDN, but I think it's well worth it. I will say, the one silly thing I like about the CDN better is the probe sleeve has a little meat temperature cheat sheet on it- something easily fixed with some screenprinting on the thermawand.Additionally, I can see how its "pen" format allows for better clipping on an apron or chef jacket/shirt- however, that's not important to me.

Thermometers don't get much better than this
I purchased this thermometer almost three years ago and I have not had to charge it once. It measures accurate to 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit and can rapidly provide temperature readings. It's magnet attaches easily to the fridge, making it very simple to use. I usually use this to measure my water for tea to be the precise temperature before steeping, but this can easily be used for cooking meat on a stove top. Would highly recommend!

Very easy to use Digital Thermometer
This thermometer is simple to use and quickly gives a temperature reading. It's the second one I have bought from Lavatools - which to me is an indication that I think it's a quality instrument that is reasonably priced.

Sturdy, speedy, satisfying!
I bought the Sesame-colored thermometer in September 2018 (for $25) and only started using it since Spring 2023, but it still holds up today (over five years later)! Now I use it almost daily for indoor grilling and it does the job; as soon as the probe is out the display starts moving and then reflects the surrounding temperature in 2-3 seconds and has never blinked or gone out. It has also been reliable and trusty; I have cooked my food down to even the minimum safe recommended temperature and luckily (assuming all else is equal) have never felt ill from my food or as if it was undercooked, making this thermometer reasonably accurate in my opinion. It also sticks well to the refrigerator/freezer and my steel silverware and is otherwise sturdy; sometimes I swing and thrust it about like a rapier and the probe and housing remain perfectly functional and intact. Granted it may not last as long as the advertised 4000+-hour battery life due to disuse, I only use it for about five minutes a day, and the messiest it has gotten was having tiny grease spots on the display, it currently shows no signs of slowing down and I trust it will continue to work well for quite some time to come. Overall I give the “Lavatools PT12 Javelin Ultra Fast Digital Instant Read Meat Thermometer for Grill and Cooking, 2.75" Probe, Compact Foldable Design, Large Display, Splash Resistant – Sesame” a respectable 4/5 stars!

There are less expensive thermometers, but...
I thought the price was a bit high compared to other thermometers however, this one is smaller and the read time is reasonably fast - probably 2-3 seconds. The small size was most important to me as I wanted to use this as a travel thermometer when staying in cabins and condos with my fishing buddies, we pretend we're chef's and eat the fish we catch for at least a few meals. Fish can go from perfectly cooked to overdone in less than a minute so cooking by temperature is a must. It's 4.5 inches long and less than 1.5 inches wide when folded. There is no backlight, but the numbers are large and easy to read. The magnet is cool although I have not used it yet. It's well made and sturdy.Would have liked a lower price, but I don't mind paying for quality. No regrets at all.

Long lasting accuracy
I have been using this thermometer daily for 5 years. I set it too close to the stove burners, leave it in the sun, drop it, leave it open for way too long, etc, and it still works as well as the day I got it. It’s fast, it’s accurate, it’s easy to use and it’s durable. Worth every penny.

Great for quickly measuring meat temp, and also air in AC ducts
it folds out and reads temperature within a second or two. it works great with various meats, but holding your hand close over the grill can get hot. I also used mine to measure air temperature inside the air conditioning ducts. I poked the needle sensor through the fiber wall and got a read, then fixed it was foil tape. I know it's not meant for that, but it works great for that too. I'm happy with it and would recommend.

Great digital themometer
Not "instant", but then none really are. It takes 2-3 seconds to give a stable reading, but it is consistent and faster response than any that I have used previously. Easy to use and read the display. Probe folds out to turn on and in to turn it off. I like the internal magnet to hold it in place on steel surfaces. It works great on the side of the stove or barbeque. I have already recommended this to several other people.

Very Easy!
I bought this so I could check the internal temperature when cooking a lot of mixed food items on the bbq. I normally use a Meater probe which is brilliant for large single pieces of meat that require a longer cook. This is great for when you have lots of different items on the bbq. The advantage of the Javelin is that you can quickly jump between burgers, steaks, sausages, and anything else you happen to be cooking. The response time is fairly quick and the build quality seems good. The temperature reading can be toggled between Fahrenheit and Celsius by changing the tiny switch in the battery compartment. I've used cheaper meat thermometers but I think this hits the sweet spot with a good combination of quality and value.

Item as expected and very fast delivery. Excellent.
Item as expected and very fast delivery. Excellent.Have not rated it for accuracy as have not tried it in ice or boiling water yet. However this is second one I have bought. The first one I left on someone else's fridge (the magnet is great for leaving the probe in a convenient place except when you forget to take it off the fridge before leaving haha). Good probe.
