Excellent useful product, especially considering the price.
I have owned several of these Dr. Mom otoscopes, including the original, third generation, fourth generation and now fifth generation. I am a physician and I keep these at home or for travel. And I give them away to friends. I have been happy with all of them. Now, having tried the fifth generation model I am quite impressed and I don’t understand how they can sell a nice quality product like this at such a reasonable price. I still have my original Welch Allen from medical school, which cost about 10 times as much. The light is a good color for examining the tympanic membrane. The image is clear. It runs on C batteries, which I like because I don’t have to worry if it’s charged or not when kids are visiting and they have an earache. The switch is much better than the cheap purple knock-off, which I regrettably bought. It even has a port for insufflation. It feels like a quality instrument, and I am looking forward to using it. Very handy to have around and well worth the money.

Handy if your kid is sick frequently
My kid has a history of ear infections and just generally catching ALL THE GERMS. She wouldn’t always present with the ‘normal’ signs or symptoms of an ear infection and we would only know for sure if we made a trip to the pediatrician. Enter this handy dandy otoscope. I have already saved 100$s in copays because I can check her ears and decide if a trip to the doctor is warranted. The otoscope comes with an insert that gives instructions and color picture insert that describes what a healthy ear looks like and several images of a not so well ear. I have also used this on my big kid that has some pretty gnarly wax build up and needs an ear lavage a couple times per year. I can take a peek to make sure no big chunks of ear wax isn’t hanging around. This has been a very good investment and works well.

Some good, some not so good
Looks great, should be a welcome addition to my medical needs. There were 2 problems encountered. One of the batteries was dead and there were no instructions on which way to install the batteries.

Great lighting
This is lightweight and the light is just right. Sometimes the plastic speculum falls off if not twisted fully in place. Great for price. I use it daily at work.

Love Dr Mom products
First, I loved the 3rd gen otoscope I had for a decade but it gave up the ghost. I decided to upgrade to this 5th gen. It is beefy, it holds C batteries. How many things even use C batteries anymore! It does work and it is manageable to control and use. I am keeping it, plus it has a lifetime warranty. The scope view is pretty good and the light output is good. I tried the 4th gen for 3 min and sent it back. It was very weak and was not very good.

Good value
I’m a retired Otorhinolaryngologist (ENT). This otoscope provides adequate light and optics. Neither are optimal. The light is not direct into the otoscope speculum, but through a prism as pictured above this accounts for its being somewhat weak. The optics on the lens are OK but not great. I’d recommend this as an otoscope to have in one’s home. The scope is well-made and very adequate for visualizing the eardrum and ear canal. You cannot use it to remove wax. Eardrums are very difficult to understand. It takes the average doctor looking at thousands and thousands of ears to be able to understand what the tympanic membrane looks like.If a parent sees a clear, pearly eardrum on one side and an angry red one on the other side, then they can make the diagnosis of otitis media. A normal ear canal on one side and a swollen red one on the other makes the diagnosis of otitis externa. One can also diagnose wax obstruction, but otherwise, non-medical folks the scope will not be that helpful.

Amazing
Has helped me so much with a kid that has chronic ear infections and now ear tubes. It never occurred to me that I could buy an otoscope and look but my mom suggested it. Works great. Customer service was awesome when I had a question. I also use to look into my other kids ears who always have tons of blocked wax so I know when to rinse their ears so the doctor doesn’t have to scrape it out.
