Includes bones, calcium! Good value and size
I love the can size and the bones included! I need the calcium but I dislike sardines which often have bones. I was looking for lightly smoked mackerel with bones but didn’t find it on Amazon. This was next best choice for me. The can size is appropriate for a large one serving for a sandwich. I drain the oil and then smush the rest into a mackerel salad with mayo, mustard, dried cranberries, whatever… quite good.

Okay for cooking, not so much for snacking
I purchased this because I like mackerel - I routinely have tinned fish for supper and am always looking for new things to add to the rotation. I really enjoyed the King Oscar mackerel fillets, but was interested in looking for something more cost effective. Chicken of the Sea Chub Mackerel in brine was a disappointment - a bit bitter and with that formaldehyde-like flavor near the bottom - good for cooking with maybe but not for snacking out of the can. This is similar to that one. It's packed in vegetable oil - which no doubt constitutes the bulk of the dizzying 1000 calories per can - and it is better than the Chub, being tender and meaty. However the oil is of unremarkable quality - usually I consume the oil from tinned fish using crackers and good white bread, but this was not palatable at all. The fish still has that formaldehyde flavor when you get near the bottom of the can, too, though it is much more mild than the chub.So I'd give it a pass, especially at this price. The smaller cans are good for me, because my suppers are light and the full 15oz can from Chicken of the Sea is a bit much, but the flavor doesn't justify the price. However, it still gets three stars because the actual meat of the fish is pretty good and would probably make a fine ingredient in a hot dish. It's just not for snacking.
