Lonely Planet Western Balkans (Travel Guide)

Better than most guides
We toured almost all the Balkan states using only this book as a guide. It was informative and helpful, and I actually read most of it. Typically, I would tear pages out of a guide and pack only that portion. But this was worth taking the entire book.

Compact with good information!
Used this book for my most recent trip. Gave good information. They had one city that was not mentioned in the book but worth traveling to. I would recommend that the author travel to Ston in Croatia. I also they need to consider updating the book because the Eastern European countries are opening up with newer discoveries and places to visit.

Very thorough for short stays in each country
Super helpful if you are visiting multiple countries in this part of the world.

Travel guides shouldn’t be political commentary
I ordered this to plan a trip through the Balkans. Being an American of Serbian descent, we wanted to hit tourist areas and natural beauty in several Balkan countries. I found the book to be heavily skewed against Serbs and there were frequent comments about past wars and Serbian aggression. I’m not here to debate the veracity of the comments because a travel guide should be a TRAVEL GUIDE, not a place for its authors to put in their political opinions on past military campaigns. For example, I want to know what architectural gems to see and don’t need to read to “look for some reminders of shelling by the Serbs”. I saw no comments against the other countries. It was so prevalent that I threw the book away on my travels. The internet was much more helpful. Perhaps a book by Rick Steves would not be so utterly biased.
