The doll is neither here nor there... but the telescope!!
I bought this purely for the telescope. The doll is an ordinary Barbie with bad poly hair. The outfit is okay, nothing to it... but the telescope! It's very detailed, stands well on it's own and is a must for any Barbie doll mini-me!! It's an affordable price, as well.

Cute!
I liked seeing Barbie as a scientist and this is a cute set! I bought it to go along with a book on the stars/sky. It would have been nice to have come with something else... a larger star map, a little dome like a planetarium, or a National Geographic book... :)

Doll is nice, display packaging was damaged during shipping.
When I was a little girl in the first grade my teacher, Miss Garrison, went around the class and asked each student what they wanted to be when they grew up. I said I wanted to be an astronomer. The teacher scoffed and chuckled at the same time and asked me, "Do you even know how to spell astronomer?" Without hesitation, I spelled it out-loud perfectly. Without saying anything more to me, she moved along to the next student. To make a long story short, I went on and majored in engineering (two degrees) and today I like promoting STEM for girls.I also always wanted a Barbie doll, my friends all had them, but my parents didn't think dolls were practical and, as youngest, I only got hand-me-downs from two older sisters and other relatives. So decades later I saw the Barbie Astrophysicist doll here on Amazon, and I just had to have it!! Was so excited! My only complaint is that I was planning on using the bubble package it came in for display as a collector's item, but unfortunately Amazon put it into a thin plastic mailing enevlope rather than a shipping box. The bubble package was crushed and cracked. As far as I can tell the doll and telescope look OK (haven't opened it up to examine closely) but that's not the point, I wanted the WHOLE package to be in new condition. It's definitely not suitable for a gift in this condition. I'm considering returning it now and thinking it may be better to order this item from the big chainstore in town and pick it up in person tomorrow.

Great Barbie for Space lovers
This Barbie is so cute. Our granddaughter loves everything about space. It's great she came with a telescope and star map. I have never seen one of these in the stores.

Excellent quality, Perfect gift
Perfect gift for 5-year-old granddaughter who loves astronomy. So glad Barbie is catching up to modern life & finally offering a variety of professional, intelligent career choices for their dolls (i.e. doctors, vets, astronomers, etc.)! Her younger brother even steals the doll & telescope to play with.

Cool doll, maybe not enough to overcome the STEM gender gap.
If you feel like you need a doll that contributes to unrealistic expectations related to a woman’s body, it may as well be this really cool Astrophysicist Barbie. Purchasing this doll will probably not, by itself, convince a little girl to go into STEM—but it’s better than the old talking Barbie that described her difficulty with math, so at least Mattel is trying something. Pair this toy with family trips to science museums, consistent encouragement at home, strong female role models in STEM, and an incredibly robust math education from teachers who aren’t afraid of math, and we may help get more young women into STEM careers.
