The paint washed right off of skin and because those little trays are so handy we had no spills. I can’t say if it comes off clothes because we had no problem keeping the paint on the houses. Great kit will definitely buy another one when we decide to make more houses. I may just order another to keep on hand for the granddaughter and her friends for just a really good activity. I think they are ornamental and not functional, but I'm not sure how you'd spot the difference if you were a bird. After a few months the glue weakens, especially if it's rainy. We had the bottoms fall out of 3 of them, but thankfully no birds had ever taken up residence in them. So maybe they are ornamental. Either way, we had a lot of fun with them.
