I have purchased this lamp twice. Neither seem to work in a standard outlet, or power-strip. What’s the trick?

No trick that I know of. Mine is plugged into an extension cord and it works fine. Great lamp!

It is on a fixed stand. I am not sure if you can clip it on something. My daughter uses it with the stand.
