is the better story-teller. Unfortunately for Amazon and me
I am familiar with Robert Utley's works which are generally well researched with the benefit of modern technology and greater accessibility to resources. Still, Walter Prescott Webb, for all his old-fashioned limitations, is the better story-teller.Unfortunately for Amazon and me, since this particular book was a gift to a good friend, Utley's book arrived in terrible, damaged condition.Sometimes I think the workers at Amazon's "Fulfillment Centers" no longer care about customer service.

A Continuation of the Author's earlier volume on 1st century
This book completes the story began in Utley's earlier book, "Lone Star Justice," and provides more insight into some of the leading persoalities in the "story." Again, my advice is for the reader to have a supplementary source of maps as those in the book are minimally useful. I gained new appreciation for the dedication and increasing professionalism of he Ranger force. It hws prevailed in spite of political interference and recurring lack of adequate resources of personnel and resources. While the history of the force has been flawed at times, it is, today, a model for criminal investigation and rugged law enforcement. A good read!

Rangers and Strangers
The richness of Texas history can be told with such intrigue. One year you think the organization of Texas Rangers is useful; the next year they should be terminated. The political whipping boy is so subject to control and easily destroyed it makes one reflect on how thin intregity is. If you can stand to see this fragile process read this book. If you want to live with legend find another book.

The definitive work on the development of the modern day Texas Rangers.
This is a great book that chronicles the evolution of the Texas Rangers from the end of the frontier days to modern times. The descriptions of the personalities, both positive and negative, that guided the Rangers through the 20th Century gives a perspective that I have not found in other historical works. Read this before reading any other work on, or by, modern Texas Rangers.

Good but not Great
This book is not as engaging as his book on the first one hundred years of the Rangers. I would definitely recommend reading the two book series in order so as to maintain some continuity.

Good book about The Texas Rangers' history.
As an amateur historian with a great interest in American West history, I knew very little about Texas history or The Texas Rangers. When I saw that the author was Robert Utley, a distinguished historian in Western American history, I knew that the book would likely be very good. The book is well researched and well written. I must admit being somewhat shocked at some of the incidents described in the book. I wasn't fully aware of the wild and violent history of Texas which seems to continue to this day. Although the book was written by a scholar, the book is an excellent read.
