The Way of Paradox: Spiritual Life as Taught by Meister Eckhart

"Both and" not "Either or"
People think these days that religion and religious people make distinctions as to good or evil, heaven or hell, and see black or white. No so with healthy religion. The world is paradoxical - think water. The Mississippi River is both a connector and a divider, a means of commerce between people and a boundary between states. Sometimes you can see your reflection in water, sometimes you can see right down to the bottom. Similar paradoxes with earth, air, fire. What else would one expect of the world of the spirit and human life? Both and, not either or. human and divine, both "saved" - rescued, made whole - and "sinner" - likely to do the wrong thing - again. The way of paradox is the way of understanding life deeply. The greats of all religious traditions know about paradox. Meister Eckhart was a marvelous man, an administrator in the world of action, and a comtemplative. He lived in a time of social tension and change. He has some important things to say about how we can understand being human and living in this world.

Deeply and satisfyingly insightful
This is an extremely valuable book for those who who want to access the spiritual underpinning of Christian religiosity. Both Meister Eckhart and the author are Catholics so Catholicism is most directly addressed. But Catholicism is not the thrust of this book. I am impressed that the author was allowed by his Order to publish it. The commonality of Meister Eckhart's teachings with the deepest holdings of eastern philosophies is striking to this reader. The writing is exceptionally clear and direct - almost conversational. I finished the book a few days ago and will read it again after it has sunk in a bit. I'm so very glad that I purchased it.

A Gem not to be missed!
The Way of Paradox is one of the most amazing books I have read. As a teacher of Eastern Spirituality, I have been on the lookout for a book from the Christian tradition that speaks to the universal truths and struggles of the human journey. Meister Eckhart (and Cyprian Smith) have dug really deep to come up with these gems from the life and teachings of Christ. Some passages sounded like the karma yoga of the Bhagavad Gita and some others like the teachings from Vedanta and Taoism. I have been recommending this to my students and friends. A must read for the anyone working on combining the contradictions of everyday living!

Clear teaching on the spirituality of Meister Eckhart
This is a wonderful book on Meister Eckhart's spiritual teachings. Easy to comprehend, yet deep to reflect upon. Although a small book, it must be read slowly, and savored. Cyprian Smith gets to the heart of the sermons and teachings. Highly recommend.
