Depends on your current strength and what exercise you want to perform. I use purple for laterals

No there isn’t a guide. You just hang it from the top then loop it through itself … put your foot/feet in the band and then do pull ups as usual. Add more bands/thicker bands for more assistance

Only 41" i length? Isn't that a bis useless to say the least?

Why would that make it useless? If they’re longer then they don’t offer enough resistance - that’s then useless. These bands are fine.
