Product Description What is it about yodel that brings smiles and laughter? The memories of old films, mountain scenes and a hint of Alpine slapstick? Great fun (as this album shows), yodel is also a wonderful age-old art form that reverberates around the world. From its spiritual homes in the Alps and rural USA, yodel's influence can be found in any country; from Hawaii to Cameroon, and in any type of music; from techno to Bollywood. The Rough Guide To Yodel aims to squash the clichés and invites you to open your ears to the joy of yodel. Review (4 stars) What this arresting CD does is show how widespread yodelling is across cultures... lovely stuff. -- The Independent, (Michael Church), November 19, 2006(5 stars) The best global yodeling album in the world ever...always somehow lifts the spirits. -- Songlines, (Julian May), March/April 2007

A great introduction to Klezmer (but don't stop here!)
This was the first disc of Klezmer I bought. When I set out I did not know any of the names in the world of Klezmer but starting from here it all fell into place. After buying this, and based on the artists and their tracks on this disc I liked most, I bought:- Rhythm and Jews- King Of The Klezmer Clarinet - Naftule Brandwein- Fidl: Klezmer violin - Alicia Svigals- Klezmokum- Di Shikere Kapelye - Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars- Agada - Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band- Di Naye Kapelye... and I have not looked back. If I were to suggest one thing that it this disc is missing, I would say it is something from The Burning Bush, this disc, for example.

Utterly bonkers!
After a quiet start, this CD quickly gets its tongue firmly in its cheek and starts to get silly. The first two-thirds are then completely bonkers (try Kishore Kumar!!) It slows down a bit with some of the C&W pieces, but listening again you realise they are pretty daft too in their own way - and the 'Yodeling Robot' makes the point very clearly... The final piece seems uncharacteristically serious, but that apart this is the only Rough Guide CD (so far) that has made me laugh out loud most of the way through!! Highly recommended - laughing is very good for you!

bEST INTERNATIONAL YODELLING COMPILATIO EVER , PROBABLY !
Yodelling , lots of it ! From hither and thither , then and now .No Frank Ifield for good or ill . Weird stuff and not so weird stuff , after all yodelling is never normal. Hats off to Gillian Welch for having a miserable track complete with yodelling , a seemingly impossible feat !

Great
This as got to be one of the most enjoyable albums I have ever listened to. If you are thinking yes or no. Just get it. What can be wrong with yodelling cowboys and cowgirls, yodeling dance trance and yodelling robots - nothing! Its got a nice intro, too. You might also be interested to know that there is a yodeling pygmy lementing his wayward pygmy wife.

Merengue & Bachata
It's o.k. but the tunes were not those I had hoped for. We have recently learned to dance the Merengue and had hoped for easier tunes to practice with; such as those we had heard when we had learnt to dance. They had a very clear beat, these do not.

The blues never die
This music is over half a century old!. It sounds so alive and kicks all else into touch.A great collection of urban electric masterclasses. So much talent from the Windy City,so good to hear it all over again .....and again. Yes, put it on repeat, let it burn through your brain cells and install itself in your soul. A high and mighty recommendation.

lovely introduction to the celebrated music of mali
i was keen to expand my knowledge of malian music and this cd has reaquainted me with the better known artists and introduced me to new voices . I particularly like the slow atmospheric and haunting pieces but there is plenty for all, maybe see some of these artists at WOMAD one day .
