Lots to like
What's good: The art. I've seen analogy of Clarke's work to that of Aubrey Beardsley, an earlier and better-known illustrator near the turn of the twentieth century. The B&W illustrations could be mistaken because of some of the detail in linework. The characters, though, seem far more sharp-edged - often as elaborate in their dress and style, but harder-edged than the lotus eaters of Beardsley's work. Also good, the attempt at presenting Clarke's colored work. What's not: The attempt at presenting Clarke's colored work. It all seems a bit out of focus, like 480p images seen at 1920p, anti-aliased. Colors seem muddy, too. I attribute this to the print-on-demand technology that brought me this book so fast. I ordered it 2022-06-13; it was printed 2022-06-13 (per indicia on back page).Clarke did a lot of work in stained glass. That suggests a vivid awareness of light and color, not brought to life in the reproductions here. I'm interested in more of Clarke's work, based on this. When I find more, this book will be back in the used market as fast as I can fling it.Artwork: 5/5. Reproduction: 2/5. Feeling generous, I rounded up.-- wiredweird

Bad printing quality for an art book!
The book consists of copyright-free illustrations (due to their age) from several books illustrated by Harry Clarke. If you find the books online, you could print out such a collection for yourself - which indeed you SHOULD do, because I can hardly imagine getting a worse quality than here.First off, many images are not really sharp, rather blurry, as if coming from a bad scanner. The main problem though is the choice of regular 80 g/m² laser paper, which obviously is not fit for carrying illustrations in an art book (!), especially if printed on both sides. Regular ghosting appears therefor, which really is a shame, because the illustrations themselves and Harry Clarke's art would deserve proper presentation.2 and a half star are not possible. Therefor 2.

Great book of an artist I wasn't really aware of
Great book of an artist I wasn't really aware of. Very interesting and dark drawings in the fin-de-siecle style. Think Beardsley, but more nervous...Good illustrations. Highly recommended.

Appaling print quality
Appears to have been printed on blotting paper, all the reproductions are fuzzy, the colour plates being the worst affected. Great shame, not worth the money. Note to the publishers: If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.

Harry Clarke’s illustrations
Plenty of image reproductions and interesting reflections of Harry Clarke’s illustrative work. Reasonably priced.
