## Description

A documentary about World War I with never-before-seen footage to commemorate the centennial of the end of the war

Review: A Must See For Everyone - This fantastic DVD, brings to life, old black and white footage of our forefathers and in my case, my grandfather, who fought in Two World Wars. Like most people, we have only ever viewed the hell of the trenches in black and white, now it has been transformed into colour, as if it was last week. Images of our fallen forefathers, lying dead in the trenches, with blood oozing out of them, previously not noticeable in black and white, really brings it home to you. We can never know what the hell of the trenches was like, in our cushy 21st century lives, but this is the nearest we can come to empathizing what our hero ancestors went through - the colourised images of trenchfoot, the lice and other hellish ways of day to day life in the trenches, such as watching your mates being blown to bits. Like many other of our brave men who lied about their age to enlist, as did my grandfather, who fought in the trenches with the Royal Irish Rifles and later with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. At the end, we hear that very old, famous, but bawdy song, The Mademoiselle From Armentieres, which would have kept up the moral of our forefathers. It is one of those songs, that once it gets embedded inside your head, you can't get it out. When we see the state of our country today and what is happening every weekend, with hate marches taking over London, we find ourselves asking - is this what they fought for? The same hate marchers, climbing up on war memorials and placing Palestinian flags on them and showing total hatred, never mind any respect for our brave forefathers and nothing is done to stop this abominable behaviour. Lest we forget. At the going down of the sun and in the morning - we will remember them.
Review: An important film that stays with you - They Shall Not Grow Old is a remarkable film, and unlike anything you will have seen before. Old archive film from the Great War, that would have previously been lost to the general public has been lovingly and respectfully restored and colourised. This has been done with an amazing eye to detail and in a very sensitive way. It brings the soldiers alive again and gives a new perspective on this terrible conflict. My grandfather and great uncle both fought in the war and passed away many years ago. I now feel I know them better, which I didn’t expect. It is very moving and stays with you, even writing this review several weeks after watching it has brought back the emotions. I’ve noticed a few reviewers have been critical because they expected the film to be in 3D. This surprised me because I’ve never seen any mention of 3D anywhere else apart from in these reviews. It’s certainly not mentioned on the accompanying documentary. 3D would have been wrong as it would be too gimmicky for this subject. This film is an act of remembrance not a video game, and it is perfectly placed as it is.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extraordinary
*by A***R on 21 January 2019*

Missed out on seeing this on the big screen as we are living in the US at the moment and I never saw it advertised here. Purchased this as soon as it was released on DVD and had it sent over. This is such an extraordinary piece of work and an absolute credit to everyone who painstakingly restored the images. It is also an outstanding tribute to the men who were part of the WW1 fight in the trenches. Whilst we have all seen footage and photos that exist, and movies that have been made telling the story, this was just unbelievable to watch real footage that was so realistic. What these people endured made me cry and how anyone survived is a miracle. For us now 100 years on it is so hard to comprehend that this is actually all factual and not a figment of someone's imagination. This should be shown to every single person in the UK, every gender, race and creed to ensure that everyone knows what the meaning of war is and the absolute futility of people not being able to compromise and live alongside each other in harmony. The sacrifice of this generation should not be forgotten as we hope that no future generation will ever have to face the choices these men did to protect what they believed in.
