Perfect way to start the day.
They're not all saints but unusually good people who have done really good things, often against the odds. An inspiring collection, well written.

Informative and pertinent
This book is a wonderful introduction to pertinent witnesses of our time. Historical saints like the greats are included (St. Francis, St. Clare, etc.) but also some of the Old Testament saints and other important figures. Not just a listing of the saints of long ago, modern witnesses are included to tie the reader to important figures of our own time. This includes Dorothy Day, the Sister-Religious Martyrs of Latin America, Oscar Romero, etc. Included are magnificent quotes from the saints to allow meditation and connection with the actual words of the holy figure. Not just content to include Catholic and Christian Saints, the author broadens the perspective to include people like Gandhi to teach the reader about the lives of lesser-known holy ones.

A Helpful Adjunct to Prayer
I love this book of reflections on "saints, prophets, and witnesses for our time." It is easy to read, inspiring, and could be used as a daily devotional. I love that in addition to the "tried and true" saints, the book contains reflections on holy people from our times. I use it daily as part of my prayer time.

Great Gift
A visiting friend left this book for us as a gift, and what a blessed gift. I promptly bought 5 copies to give away myself. We have this very human need to hear stories of people. We can slake it with celebrities ~ or with saints. This is a book of heros and heroines spanning the centuries, with a decidedly Catholic bent. It's readable and it's fresh. I don't always agree but I am always challenged. There is a saint for each day; my husband and I have taken to discussing this saint of the day.Christopher Lasch wrote: "In a narcissistic, self-pleasingculture, we welcome celebrities, because we lack imagination and courage.Traditional heroes make demands on us, but celebrities make no moral claim on us. Glittering stars in our culture merely feed our narcissism, our love of self, our addiction to what society finds pleasurable. But heroes stretch our imaginations, and stand as imperatives, calling, demanding welive a higher, holier life."This book helps us hear the call of the saints. It's a wonderful antidote to celebrities and at the top of my list for gifts.

Amazing book
This book is a treasure. Each day bios a 'saint', many of whom lived, served and died in obscurity. Some can be found in the Christian Bible and some in the following centuries, but all were followers of God. Many are not officially recognized by any religious group, but all belong to the glorious heritage of God's people. Compelling, awe-inspiring, easy to read. We've given so many copies away, I should buy this by the case. A really terrific book.

Why Only Catholics?
I understand that the Roman Catholic Church has a pretty extensive process to determine if a person is a saint or not. I approve of that process and think it is pretty wise. Still, it means that only Catholics get saints-- at least the "athletes of Jesus" who have changed the world for the good. Mind you, I love Catholic saints. They are awesome. But no protestant, Muslim, Buddhist or Orthodox saints? Don't they have athletes of Jesus that just don't make the cut because they didn't attend the right church? That just doesn't seem fair.I guess it didn't seem fair to Robert Ellsberg, either. Thankfully, he wrote a powerful book full of provocative examples for us to love and emulate. Thanks, Robert.

Start every day with this.
Another replacement copy. Along with Joan Chittister's "A Passion For Life : Fragments of the Face of God" they provide every faith-base teacher with insightful, encouraging and challenging short stories to begin each day.

A must-have for the bedside table
This is a really worthwhile purchase - a 'saint' for the day. Read an inspiring story about an inspiring person before you get out of bed, or before you turn off the bedside light. The stories themselves are well-written, thought-provoking and insightful, the cast of characters from all over the world. Not all are 'Saints' in the Roman Catholic sense of the word, though most are - these 'saints' include non-Christians, and non-Catholic Christians. This is one book I think I will keep with me for the rest of my life.

saints and sinners
As all the reviews in the book say, these daily reflections are so varied and diverse. This is a remarkable collection of people who followed their own call from God. In this secular modern world to read a little of this big book is inspiring and warming. Buy it.
