Mayhew to the Rescue!
Situation: DIY'er now, but did shop auto repair for years, know my way around a wrench. Facing seized muffler flange, some damage to threads. Wanted to salvage and rethread. Tried Stringer metric stud remover based on Amazon review. Did not engage stud for removal. My sense is the product would be fine on studs in good condition. Description could have been more specific (but that's the subject of another review). Had Mayhew for back-up. The product description clearly stated the stud remover would work on studs in all condition and boy did it! As advertised. Use in tandem with impact gun (not for hand use), and it will make your life easier. I was most impressed as it did the job with no added heat (heat will damage tool), usually a must ingredient for a successful stud removal recipe. I would recommend this highly for stud removal as the gradual tightening action is less destructive than the removers that require a hammer and if not used properly will just chew up a stud. I don't know if there is a remover that's universally successful in every situation, since positioning outside of an ideal "bench" situation can render any stud remover useless. Know your situation and it's limitations. But if you look at the picture and feel you can get it in position for your job, it will kick ass. Keep in mind when you get it, it will be bigger than you might think. Good tool.

Mayhew stud extractor
I purchased this stud extractor for its purpose . It will easily remove a stud that isn’t frozen into the threads . If the threads are frozen , more work and effort will be necessary . Any type of extractor must be used with restraint as they are not designed to work miracles . Penetrating oil is needed but not always enough . You will most likely need to heat the stud as well . You will have to judge the amount of corrosion . Clean thoroughly with a wire brush or cup wire brush . Soak with penetrating oil or your favorite penetrant solution . At this point , heat may be applied and will likely needed . Your judgement and patience will be needed . As long as the threads weren’t cross threaded and the hood for the stud to unscrew exists , heat and penetrant normally work for you . This extractor gets a firm grip but use judgement . If a wrench , breaker bar or impact don’t loosen it with reasonable force , more time for heat and penetrant will be necessary . Too much force will cause the jaws to slip . Use hood judgement . Be reasonable with wrenches , breaker bars , and impacts . Get the feel for the stud first . Start with gradual and increased torque . Too much torque and the tool will slip or break the stud . Can the tool be broken ? With enough force , any tool can be broken . Usually that occurs when poor judgments is used . As stated , no extractor is a miracle tool . But a good quality extractor , good judgement and good procedure is best applied . Heat and penetrating oil are always a good start .

This tool will change your life forever.
This tool will change your life. I was putting some new headers on my '95 ZJ Grand Cherokee (Doug Thorley Headers) and you have to remove the stock exhaust manifold studs from the heads. 20 yr old iron heads and studs that have spent much of their life covered in mud=the studs don't want to come out at all.Tried lots of PB Blaster, tried lots of heat, no love. Couldn't budge them, double nuts would just spin off the stud without turning it. I was sure I was going to break one off.... until I found this tool. This Mayhew Stud Extractor made quick work of those studs, pulled every single one of them out with no problem at all. More than worth the price.

Poor metal quality
Review; "Nice product, did the marketing and advertising staff make it"I think they used recycled aluminum cans for these jaws. It would qualify as a "single use tool".....if it actually worked one time and broke.

Excellent Product
Works amazing with no slip! I have used it plenty for broken exhaust manifold studs and bolts!

Unable to use for my purpose
I purchased this specifically to remove an stubborn exhaust stud in my motorcycle. As others have noted, it's large size really limits where it can be used. I my case, it was much too large in diameter to latch onto the exhaust stud- the cylinder cooling fins were in the way (honestly, it was not even close). This stud extractor is a larger than a standard drill chuck.I did however 'test' the extractor on a bolt I had put in my vise- it seems like it would work fine under different circumstances. Overall, it seems quite heavy-duty and well made. It just wasn't usable for my purpose- not really the tools fault as I was aware of the size (I was desperate though, so I went for it!). Perhaps it will come in handy another time.

Very useful
A stud supporting my T-case crossmember needed to be removed. All traditional methods for removal failed, this gadget was my last hope. It spun the stud out in seconds, well worth the money, trust me.
