I want to put this rod in the center of a round wood dowel and have it attach to a neodymium rare earth in a wood tablet. would this work?

It is surely magnetic. Depends how strong the magnet is and how thick the wood between the magnet and rod is.

Yes. I bought these rods "blindly"( with no reference whatsoever); now I know they are: 5.2 mm. (diameter) x 200 mm. (Long) ( too small for the price, isn't it? )
